Cleans and Clean and Press
« on: November 29, 2006, 07:16:43 AM »
A lot of folks on here do these two lifts?  I been doing em for a good year now and my traps, mid-back, delts have gotten a lot bigger/thicker!  Seems like all those years of doing shrugs was a waste!

I do the clean and press as my primary shoulder exercise most of the time...i alternate between it and a seated DB overhead press.

cleans alone can pack on some mass very quickly...

Agree!  After doing either heavy dead's from the floor or rack pull's, I will throw in a set of cleans!

I am gonna start doing this during the winter!

Mondays Power Cleans and Deadlifts/Rack Pulls

Thursdays Hang Cleans and Ass To Grass Squats

I think this will pack on some mass in the traps doing the cleans twice week!

Cleans and Clean and Presses are great exercises.

I do a modification in that i do the clean and press as a hang clean and press, starting each rep from just above the knee, trying to focus more on the shoulders and taking the legs out of the lift.
Sets of 10....burn.

I love to clean and press, but i turn the clean part of it into more of a upright row...it is devistating on shoulder day.  i do not use this as my only pressing movement during shoulder day, it is merely a secondary exercise.

Yeah that's what I was doing when I was doing them a couple of months ago. I love it. Should probably put them back into my routine.

Both are excellent for general development AND are excellent conditioning exercises, unlike most BB exercises.

IMO all-round exercises like these also imbue the physique with a more athletic look by hitting so many areas with more general, less specific movements.

You can also do a set of shrugs before the C&P, in a pre exhaust style. While the traps are worked by the straight shrugs, they are challenged even more by the cleans and than the presses, to follow immediately. Cleans (and Hi-Pulls) are , in themselves, a very good laterial & posterior delt movement.  Throwing in the press gives icing to the cake, as far as outstanding delts go. In any event, the clean & Press give great thickness to the whole shoulder girdle. Shirt sizes do go up.

Some of the stronger men I've knows have done the C&P with DB's. Outstanding strength & size builder. And a lot of them prefer one arm C&P's, insuring equal development and control to each side of the body. The C&P is a wonderful conditioning exercise for building stamina (strength+endurance). Front squat cleans and  presses give a ultimate workout for the whole body. Tops for a lot of athletes. Good Luck.

Actually the C&P is used as a one unit compound exercise. Clean and than press off the shoulders each rep. Of course there are many variations of this. Some break it down to just cleans and the next exercise they do are presses, etc, etc, etc.

Push or jerk press also work very, very well with cleans. If you were to do Hi-Pulls rather than cleans, than the exercise would have to be a two parter, with the presses following after a Hi-Pull set was done. Good Luck.

Thanks yall w/ the responses!  JPM, in fact my shirt sizes have gone up after doing cleans, high pull's and even snacthes from going heavy this past year!

Great lifts that give that thick rugged look!
