Work muscle group 2 times in one day?
« on: December 03, 2006, 04:17:11 PM »
I have a smal workout facility at my work, with life fitness machines and only dumbbells up to 50 lbs.  Is it worthwhile for me to do some extra work on a muscle group in the evening with barbells after I've done my earlier workout in my work gym (say doing squats after legs at the work gym or barbell bench press after chest)?  Would I be better off doing the gym workout one day and doing the barbell workout on another day after some recovery time?

i wouldn't hit the same bodypart twice a day. your really saying for over trained. if your a serious bber 50's are nothing.  you could double split. if you reall wanted to workout twice a week. hitting a bodypart in the morning then another one in the even.

I don't believe there's a problem with overtraining in that situation so long as there is adequate rest in between the days that you hit a particular bodypart.  For example, I have dumbells at work so I hit certain exercises during the day and then at night different exercises for the same bodypart in my home gym.

The bigger issue is designing a program that you can accomplish consistently because it fits into your schedule.

You could use the 50lb dumbells to get blood flowing into your muscles (I think this depends on how strong you are right now) this will help with soreness.

Kevin Levronne used to do a 2 times a day bodypart workout-------I remember reading about it in an ironman magazine years ago--------he didnt do it all the time---perhaps this was one of the factors in how he got so back in shape so quick ? Everyone always marveled at how he was able to do that !!!

Once in a while it might help, otherwise i'd just use the gym time for other muscles, use the machines if they're good for all muscles, just do cardio/situps or skip working out & save the main effort for heavier weight later.

Do it sparingly (twice a month), its a good way to shock the muscle into growth... It can work well if not overdone.  ;)
