Leg training with an injury
« on: June 02, 2007, 09:52:46 AM »
I'm caught between a rock and a hard place and need some help...

I was recently diagnosed with a slightly torn meniscus what they call a focal defect of the cartiledge.

Basically in a nutshell my patella is slowly wearing away and because of this I am to refrain from

ANY type of squats
Lunges
Leg Presses

Now I am training to do a show and need to continue to add mass to my legs...

Anyone have ANY recommendations? I can do the "Taboo exercises" but will be in pain for days and can increase the "wear rate: of my knee cap

ok so that's a 4 months away or so, but then you would need to diet for quite a while and you wont realistically put on leg mass during a diet so i wonder how much you could put on anyway during this short time

i dont know how your legs look but i dont think anything dramatic would happen in a few months as it is. maybe you need to focus more on keep what you allready got

would leg extensions and seated and/or lying legcurls work for you?

Basically you've got a chronic problem and are f***, which is pretty obvious don't you think?

In addition to trying leg extensions, see if weighted step-ups are possible. I say this only because exercises that are similar can still sometimes be very different in terms of effect on the muscles and joints. Squats might aggrevate the knee while something similar might not; each variation has to be tried.

Then sample things that aren't related to lifting, all after extensive warmup of course. Climb stairs or hills with some extra weight, or cycle using decent resistance. Or try very very high rep squats only after pre-exhausting with stationary bike or stairs-try using resistance bands instead of weights for the squats, which have a different, smoother feel that can be easier on the joints. With these you might gain something from the extensive pumping, or at least create the impression by increasing definition.

This is true.

I think it's going to be hard to lift heavy legs when you have bad knees.  I have a similar problem from years of football, running, rugby and other contact/high impact sports.  It's a fact of life and something you might have to work around or cut out altogether.  I'd go to a physical therapist or someone who specializes in sports medicine to fine a suitable alternative.

All,

Thanks for all the advice. It is true, how much addtional mass can I put on in 4 months, the problem I have when dieting for shows....my legs take the biggest hit when loosing size so I am already behind the 8 ball.

I cannot do any stair exercises as this is when the pain really hurts....learned that when you go upstairs you put 2x your BW of pressure on your knees and 5x your BW when coming down..crazy huh?

The more I ponder it I may just go at a moderate pace and perhaps forego competing this year and come back next year....

You guys are awesome...Appreicate the fb....keep it coming
