need to work biceps after heavy back workout ?
« on: July 29, 2007, 03:48:58 PM »
Im resting my biceps because of a bad elbow, but after doing partial deads, heavy rows, seated hammer strength rows, pull downs-wide and close grip-my biceps are about fried.  I wound up doing 3 light sets of curls to end the workout.

But this got me thinking about how much biceps work you get with back/pulling.  I have read people who say they rarely even work them because they hit them while doing back.

i personally feel training them after biceps is dangerous and counterproductive. i mean they are already worn out from back not warmed up  going heavy afterwards could lead to injury.

you should tryyour best to isolate your lats during backday exercises. i am to the point now where my mind muscle connection has my biceps completely relaxed and doing virtually none of the work.     they dont get pumped or sore in the slightest during back movements.

its best to visualize your hands as just being hooks, and your arms as just a link between where your lats insert under your shoulder/top of the armpit and you hooks(hands)to the eight.   then during the back movents, cdompletely focus on your lats, and isolate completely your back, relaxing your biceps/reard delts/traps.

i use straps and yes you should use the hands as hooks on back day, but none the less-the seated hammer row with palms faced inwards, definitely works your biceps-i like that machine-it seems to get your upper back/rhomboids/traps really well.

Ya there's something to be said for thinking that bis are already covered by indirect back work; even working the lats fully and bis to the minimum, it might seem to be enough for some.

BUT..every BB with great arms that i can think of did/does direct work. :o Myself i can tell the difference between doing direct arm work and not.

If you think you get enough from lats for bis, use that for several months then assess what's happened in terms of progress.

You could then add a couple of direct sets back in and later add more, hopefully tweak the extra direct work sets to more or less optimal without any redundancies in terms of extra sets.

biceps is a small muscle group. if it gets enough work - youll notice and dont need to hit it directly. if not - a few set of curls a week should be enough and most people have no problem adding that somewhere in their routine. personally i got a whole day just for arms but thats just me.

are you lacking bicep development or are your biceps proportionate?  if they are proportionate then just hit them with a few sets.  if they need work then you need to hit them on a day either by themselves or with triceps...

As suggested, the hands should be though of as hooks (without a too tight thumb grip) and using strap can give less worry on the grip it's self, when doing extra heavy stuff.  But also put attention on the movement/pull of the elbows when doing any lat pull exercise. In other words, learn to pull with the elbows. That joint/leverage point can be very important when working the back (chins, rows, pull downs, up-right rows, etc).

The biceps are pretty well worked when doing lat/back exercises. Some men do not include any direct arm exercises. I do not included. For myself, any curling exercise is boring. If that works for you, than great. But for most trainee's a actual curling movement (of 2 to 3 sets), after a back workout where the biceps are already primed for work, can be rewarding. A suggestion would be the basic BB curl, with a slight cheating style. A true cheating style is not doing 5 or 6 good reps and than cheating on the last 3 or 4 reps. It is when every rep, for the exercise, is preformed with that slight cheat. Doing 8 reps? That 8 reps of cheating. People also get partial reps confused with cheating reps. Or even "Burns" as partial reps. Are you cheating yourself by not doing by the book exercises? No, only cheating yourself of what might be more gains in muscle mass and strength. Good luck.

Ditto. I even tried this guys wrist wrap with a metal hook on the palm...pure lats, it was awesome... NO forearm / bi fatigue. I would only use them for lats though. I don't like the though of being dependant on wraps for all heavy lifts.

Good in theory, pls. provide a list of BBs with great arms who have followed this.

Also the idea that the size of the muscle should effect workout frequency is unproven and  something i've never found convincing.

agreed...  The amount of work should depend on the development of the muscle group, not physical size of it! ;D
