That's a key word when it comes to organised religion. Control. Throughout history, churches and churchmen have been dogmatic. This is how it was, how it is, and how it's gonna be. Your tiny mortal opinion is as nothing, so best button it and do what we tell you.

The suspension of reason, throwing common sense out the window, control, dogma...these have nothing to do with the Bible or religion in general. It has to do with people following leaders, scientists, etc. without questioning. It can happen with religion as much as it can happen with politics and science.
In politics:
The old Soviet Union, China and Cuba banned religion. Are you telling me that there was no "control" over the people in these places?
Laws are interpreted and explained by a few justices. People follow them without questioning. Have laws never been manipulated to control people or to push an agenda? Have leaders never deceived people to get them to support the leader's agenda?
In science:
Science is great, but many people take what scientists say by faith and do not question or do their own research. Many people tell me "I wasn’t sufficiently interested to go check out the so-called “facts” for myself. I assumed that reliable people had already done that." We have to remember that some scientists are dishonest and have an agenda to obtain or maintain recognition and funding.
Scientific findings and scientists themselves can be used by leaders to control and manipulate people.
Scientific theories and beliefs can encourage people to commit atrocities and to create wars.
