How to get RID of a pump.
« on: September 12, 2007, 01:34:36 PM »
Yes, odd question I know.  But I was wondering, are there any methods to get rid of a pump?  Reason I ask is because for our IST we will be doing our running last, and due to having a decent pump from doing pushups, situps, and pullups, it really drains the legs when you run.  So to improve running times I figure the best method would be to see if there is a way to get rid of a pump quickly.  That said, anyone have some insight?

From the information that I can gather, the reason it beats you up on the runs more is because your heart was just pumping blood like crazy to your upper body, then it has to switch gears and start to get blood to your legs.  So I figure if there is a way to stop blood naturally from entering into my upper body then in theory I can cut down on my run times.  Then again, I can get by without doing that, but I'm a competitive bastard. :D

but i find it funny with all the supplements targeting that you get a good pump when i try to avoid getting a pump as much as possible as it would have an negative effect on my training...

Have you tried the test and noticed a difference of is this speculation?  I understand the theory behind it but how much of a pump do you get doing 1 minute of pushups?  Also, is the run DIRECTLY after of do you get a few minutes?  Lastly, wouldn't squats prime your legs for the running?

Try using baking soda. Add 5 grams to the pre-workout drink.

Baking soda, creatine and caffeine are pretty much the only three supplements I would say without a doubt works.

Cytomax...it is a great product that you should check out.  I know college and Olympic athletes using this and Endurox for an effect that you are looking for.  I use it with some creatine during workouts and I could go forever.  PM me if you need more info.

It starts as so:

5 minutes of stretching straight into 2 minutes of push ups, then flip around and do 2 minutes of situps, then get up and try to hit 20 pull ups.  Then you run.  I've tried squats and jumping around to get some blood pumping, but it doesn't seem to work all that well.

I am keeping this short and simple (for me that is a challenge)

The Pump: Only so much blood can get into a muscle area at one time. When more blood enters the already packed muscle region being exercised, it backs up. Giving a pump. A pump area is where blood is gorged and not allowed to flow it's natural way for a period.  Some pumps may last hours and ever a day or so. A pump, with regards to a medical view, is not healthy. To a BB'er it is craved and worked for. A pump is never an indication of muscle growth, just a whole bunch of blood with nowhere to go at that moment. But it will be reduced in a matter of time. A misleading pump does give a mental boost to any BB'er

After C2k7 does his upper body work and begins to run, his legs should respond by demanding more of a blood supply to them. That's one of the body's main response when doing physical actions, it needs that. The upper body pump will reduce quite a bit (though not completely). After a couple of weeks (or sooner) the body adapts. C2k7 should have no problem with his legs feeling drained after the upper body work. The first 100 yards or so of a running should set the legs up. In other words, you will get rid of most of the upper body pump by running. Good Luck.
