Hah weird i do the same thing! I never noticed ronnie do it, but if i wrap my thumb around like normal, i get a peircing pain in my left hand, but im also affraid of the bar slippin, so this method kinda helps with both.

ugh . . . that sounds concerning, Beener

might want to get that checked out

The spotter should never have taken his hands away after the kid pushed it into the rack the first time. Sure, I don't think the kid should have been using a thumbless grip, but this "accident" is clearly the fault of the spotter. Also the fact that he is older, you would think he would know better??? ::)

1. You can't blame the spotter if the lifter is complete idiot.
2. Monkey- grip is like any other thing in this world. You have to know how to do it before you can do it.

First thing like all of you have already said Thumbless is very very dangerous. So why use it when doing that kind of weight. My guesstimation is that was around 300 pounds, my God you know that hurt!!! But the blame is not all on the kid, the spotter was fucking pathetic!!! The first thing he does on the first hand off is throw his damn hands in the air. WTF is that about???? And then on the second the stupid fuck does it again, looks like a highschool gym and he is prolly there strength coach, NICE real FUKK'n Nice!!! Stupid fukks like him piss me off badly!!!!

I gotta agree with you...

Whether you wanna blame the spotter or not, there is no reason to release the bar the way he did, if you watch it again, you'll see that the bar comes off the guy's hands at the EXACT moment that spotter RIPS his hands off the bar!
just not good enough

rather, for a period of time i had a peircing pain, primarely doing incline presses.  I find i lift better with my thumbs running along the bar.

Too many poeple dont know how to spot. Personally i dont like getting a spot because once i have somenoe standing over me i seem to try less hard because i know if i cant quite get it they'l help me.  Too many poeple though think when you're spotting you gotta help them on every set.

So last week some dude asks me to spot him and when  he coudn't get it up much i'd baaaaaarely help so its pretty much just him slowely getting it up. He wasnt too pleased, he expected me to do most of the work. needless to say i explained my reasoning but he got someone else to spot next time, works good for me, i hate spotting people.

yeah....i like how people blame the spotter...wtf? like anyone could have caught 300lbs when falling with an underhand grip....i would rather
the guy crush his ribcage than me rip both bicep tendons from my arms....it is never a spotters fault that someone drops the weight

You can get so much more power round the weight when your thumbs are over the bar - it's almost like making a fist through the bar. Thumbless grips are for trainers with bad habits copying bodybuilders they've seen doing light weights in photoshoots in Flex magazine.

lmao

ronnie coleman uses a thumbless with 495lbs
dorian used it for 405lbs
arnold used it for 365lb inclines

thats not exactly light weight...its a matter of preference.

imo,,,doin it thumbless takes some of the load and stress from ur wrists and shoulders and put it on ur chest which is an advantage,,,......ive seen some guys use straps if doin it thumbless with heavy weights

i agree, that is the reason i use thumbless sometimes...it puts some stress in my wrists (in incline barbell press for example) and usually after that i feel somepain on them
