I meant "we" agree on the GI bill,

Well in Cali they have discounts at least where i'm at.

And in the BX here and in Ohio and Hawaii it's cheaper

And if no tax is the only thing the commissary gives then it's a plus.

But i see what you are saying from your point of view and can see why you don't think it's much because it wouldn't be enough to get me to join.   The life experience would though if i was 18 again.

ok, I gotcha, but no the pro's def dont outweigh the con's.  Thats why after 11 1/2 years I am punching.  Going back to NY to work for the state.  Better pay, same bennies pretty much.  Never shop at the BX or commissary anyway so I dont really care about that crap.

Taking a hop (free military airline transportation) is a great benefit too.

Thats if youre stationed at a base that has air frames that can do hops.  Also you arent gauranteed a ride, all space a.  You could have a vacation planned and show up to get on a plane and guess what you dont go.  Much less stress just to use conventional airlines...anyone else?

Yes there are risks involved, but I've taken a hop and saved over a grand.  I have friends who take them all the time.  Nice perk.

I have never done it, u really have to plan. AF guys seem to have the system down alot better and take advantage more. The base line health care is pretty good. If ur in an area without specialists u can go off post. The PX is no bargain unless its big electronics..no tax but AFFESS sucks. The commisaries are pretty good but it depends on where u are. The one at Riley sucks while the one on FT Meade kicks ass. The food is cheaper and the bigger the store the better the chance that u will get the same choice at the best supermarkets. They are on pare with a super walmart. That said I don't shop at mine alot. They're talking about transfering GI bill rights to dependents. Some colleges will give u free instate at some schools. Ohio is one.
