I think thats one idea, at the very least I think u should loose all benefits associated with citizenship, such as student loans/grants subsidized by the government, no medicare/medicade, social security. Maybe we don't bounce u but u will have to pay a penalty. Maybe a tax penalty...

no but if you're not willing to serve (if their was a draft) you should forfeit the rights the rest of the people are fighting for, right to vote, right to own fire arms, right to own property, right to receive federal aid,etc etc etc

Depends on the war.....WW2, there should be penalties but not a loss of citizenship or a forfeit of rights outside a short prison term fro dodging the draft.

But the bull shit of pre-emptive invasion on bullshit info, like in iraq......no way.

If we are TRULY threatened like in WW2 yes there should be penalties, but not loss of citizenship or the rights granted.

I disagree...If the Draft were reinstituted, those drafted could not pick and choose where they served. I think a government service draft as opposed to a military draft would work the best. One would have better benefits when u get out, but if u didn't do either, u would pay a stiff penalty.

The main reason BUSH and Company are getting away with doing what they have done with Iraq is because there isn't a draft.  Once you reinstate the draft people won't stand for going to war on a whim like Nam or Iraq.   However, if it's justified,  imprison the people who dodge it.

People convicted of dodging the draft (if we ever have one) would be felons and forfeit much of their citizenship privileges anyway.  Same is true for those who don't register with Selective Service.

Every year or two thats proposed. I think the closest it ever got was 2002 to any kind of action, committe, vote whatever. Some people think we don't, imagine that. Only when deployed.

And even when deployed we still pay state taxes, social security etc, the ONLY thing we dont pay is federal taxes on our base pay.

I could name plenty but it really all depends on what u want to do. As far as state taxes....I don't..most people either have Texas or Florida as state of residence.

I give you the free healthcare, even though it is subpar at best.
Most businesses dont give military discounts anymore.
Consumer goods arent discounted at BX/PX's, tax free yes, but marked up to make up for difference.
Food is not any cheaper.
Gas is the same price as off base.
GI Bill is a good plus.
Not all jobs in the military cross over easily to civilian side.

Sorry i have to disagree.  I was a military brat, and live right outside an AFB.  Plus my father who is retired military still works on a Base as a civil servant.

My experience with health care was great.  (of cousre i never had to stay at Walter Reed  ;) so you may be right)
The business outside this base do give discounts......last i remember the movie theater asked me if i was in the military
I was in the BX in July and compared prices of the Sopranos CD's becuase i needed to get season 6.  It was 5 dolars cheaper then best buy and there was no sales tax.
Food is cheaper, my mother still shops there becuase she's frugal penny pincher.
Gas might be the same....you may be right there,  i'll check.
we are on the GI bill
But of course not all jobs transfer, however many do and many use it to get better jobs when they leave service.

Not to mention, the life experience of being in the military at a young age is definatly a benefit.

Dependants always are treated better than the service member, well known fact.
As for discounts, depends where you live.  MOST places dont have many discounts left, if any.  And no 10% discount is a huge perk in my opinion.
Food is not cheaper on base because the commissaries only sell name brand items, there is no tax on any of the food, however everytime you buy something at the commissary you pay a sercharge depending on what you get.
How are YOU "on" the GI Bill???  It is for Service Members only, not dependants.
The only thing I will agree with you on is the life experience.  Most young individuals lack a sense of pride, honor and integrity.  We are great jobseekers because dicipline has been instille din us and we work our asses off.

I meant "we" agree on the GI bill,

Well in Cali they have discounts at least where i'm at.

And in the BX here and in Ohio and Hawaii it's cheaper

And if no tax is the only thing the commissary gives then it's a plus.

But i see what you are saying from your point of view and can see why you don't think it's much because it wouldn't be enough to get me to join.   The life experience would though if i was 18 again.
