Pull Ups vs Chins
« on: December 19, 2007, 12:14:10 PM »
Hello everyone, I was just wondering if anyone know what makes the chest muscle have more mass/bigger. I've been doing pull ups and chins a lot lately for soccer and have noticed it makes my outer chest(pectoralis minor) very big and I don't like how it looks. My chest isn't tight, because of this. It's a differnt feeling than working out my chest, because it only hits the outer chest. Does anyone know if pull ups or chins, wide grip close grip, what is the best way to do these without them hitting your chest or do I have to stop doing them.

If you're getting chest development from chins or pullups, you need to learn how to do them right.  The only impact it has on your chest is that it stretches it at the top of each rep, which should be a GOOD THING.  Increased flexibility = not hunched over like an 80-year-old man.

BTW, don't stop doing them.

 ???

Aren't "chins" another term for "pull-ups" and don't they work your back and arms mostly?

Hi Alex!   :)
I agree, they are a good basic exercise for widening the back.

For adding mass/thickness to the chest, nothing really beats the good ole' bench press.

chin ups usually means underhand grip(easier) and pull ups are the overhand grip(harder)...at least that is my opinion. They are also  the best exercises ever for the lats. if done correctly.

My opinion:

chin-up = underhand grip, arms pretty close togheter, works lower back, lats, bis
pull-up = overhand grip, arms can be close (more for lats + lower back) or wide (more on lats and upper back) + tris

It's not a chest exercise, but the pec. minor and major are synergists. So if your chest is weak it can be a problem.
I have a weak chest and when i started training i had some serious soreness in my chest too from chins and pull-ups.

Very good exercise though.

The chest (pecs) help to keep the upper body stable while doing chins/pull-ups. So they are brought into play/worked, being the opposite muscle group of the back/lat's. The pecs muscle action is brought into it to a lesser degree. An example of a  reverse muscle action is that the lats are brought into play when benching, as a support factor.  The abs are also well works when chinning. And of course the biceps. Which just shows that the body does act as a unit.

Chin's are pretty much just that, to  or under the chin. Pull-ups tend to be a motion where the upper pecs/chest are touch, each rep, with the bar at the top position. This would be Gironda and other BB'ers of the '60's-70's style. More of a complete motion. Don't see too many guy's doing that version except on a lat machine. The names have become pretty much interchangeable  throughout the years. Than there are  pull-up, where the back of the neck is touched, each rep, to the bar. Gives a newer slant to the posterior delts and the lat's themselves.

Hand grip, under or overhand, are usually interchangeable with chins or pull-ups. If your gym has a hammer grip on the chin/pull-up bar than you may find that more agreeable for doing any version of the exercise. If the gym has a set of gymnastic rings, than you are in luck. They allow the natural twisting of the wrist and elbows, giving less tension on the shoulder joints themselves. And may offer a more  complete form for any chin/pull-up exercise. Also affects the biceps greatly. If in doubt, check out the lat & arm development of most any gymnast.

Try adding extra weight (weight belt) to a chin/pull-up workout. Can be on a equal par with heavy BB row  as a superior mass builder. Good Luck.

i do both back to back... one set of chins the one set of pullups...
or sometimes straight 4 sets of each..
and they have given me the great back i had.. along with deads and rows.. my back is one of my standout bodyparts
choice is an illusion

This article suggests that a great back is built much faster through chins than through pulldowns:

Good read, however from my experience there are pros and cons on pulldowns/pullups, with a lot of similarities mixed with some differences. I think if similar resistance and form is used they're both effective.

There was nothing in what was said there that made a stronger case for one or the other either.

^ Agree.
Many a great back have been built using both.

chins or pullups, i guess its the same exercise but with diffrent terms, its a free weight basic exercise,,,u cant help but have other muscles involved as well.
imo if u do them with a close curl grip ,ur chest will be involved the least, but ur biceps and back will do the most
