I am very sceptical he never tried them. He was still training and competing for years when everyone began taking them and no one knew of potential health risks or were they illegal. There was simply no stigma or big deal attached to taking them at that point..why wouldn't he? Why would he instantly take a dislike to something everyone did and got results off and no one knew was bad?

Exactly.  After 80, it's all genetics.  A healthy lifestyle may prevent you from dying or being sickly in your 50's, 60's, and 70's, but beyond that you're fighting old age, not heart disease, diabetes, etc, etc.

I have one set of grandparents who are healthy and approaching 100, so I'm pretty optimistic on this score!  :D

WTF, approaching 100?  Speak on this.

That's not the point. I have said - on more than one occasion - that the vast majority of bodybuilders die before reaching the average life expectancy of a North American.

The fact that other people die before reaching the national average is not the issue.

The question is why are a group of people who exercise regularly and monitor their diet carefully dying before the average age of mostly sedentary people?

Steroid abuse (not use) and hidden vices.  The moderate users - I have no idea.

Yes. I'm finding more who did live longer than the national average.

Clarence Ross is still alive and John Grimek died at 88.

George Eiferman went at 77, just creeping into the bottom percentile of the 77-80 average for a North American.

I am not just talking about the drug addicted Jekyll and Hyde experiments..I mean the old schoolers too.

Guys like Park and Reeves were supposedly drug free all their lives (hmm..not even one little cycle eh) and stood for health and vitality.. Reeves went at 74. Park didn't make it to 80.

I'm struggling to think of any bodybuilders that live over and above the national average.

And as for the modern drug bloated, oil filled, drug dealing/smuggling scumbags...surely this batch will not see 60.

Same age like every other average person in the world.

Steroids/alcohol/smoking etc. don't say shit. It's about genetics.

72 is the average life expectancy last i heard

i don't know but i don't think it's healthy to overeat to gain muscle

lifting heavy probably isn't healthy either

I would have thought 72 sounded more realistic tbh. Especially with all the obese fuckers in North America.

The chart I consulted said 77-80 for Brits and those in the USA. 80+ for Aussies, Canucks, French, Italians and Spanish.

I agree with your other points. The overeating is defo not great for longevity and sustaining such levels of musclemass is also a strain on the body.

I do wonder if this modern bunch will say fuck genetics and kill themselves sooner than their DNA has planned!

yes the extra muscle isn't healthy

it doesn't matter whether it is muscle or fat, bodyweight is bodyweight

the bigger you are the harder it is on your heart
