Why don't bodybuilders live very long?
« on: January 05, 2008, 05:14:31 PM »
I am not just talking about the drug addicted Jekyll and Hyde experiments..I mean the old schoolers too.

Guys like Park and Reeves were supposedly drug free all their lives (hmm..not even one little cycle eh) and stood for health and vitality.. Reeves went at 74. Park didn't make it to 80.

I'm struggling to think of any bodybuilders that live over and above the national average.

And as for the modern drug bloated, oil filled, drug dealing/smuggling scumbags...surely this batch will not see 60.

What's the mystery with Park and Reeves? You think their bb lifestyle would make them live well beyond average age, beyond what their genes dictate? They sure didn't die surprisingly early IMO.

I would expect - well, hope - people who live an exceptionally healthy lifestyle to have a life expectancy well over that of the national average.

Hail to thee Englishman!

I am an Englishman and am statistically more likely to die sooner than a Frenchman, Spaniard or Italian. So will you my American chums.

Why do you think Arnold had heart surgery?

Matarazzo heart problems, TP kidney, Flex Wheeler kidney...

To name a few.

It's better to burn out than to fade away.

Bodybuilding is here to stay.

Never the drugs. It is always congenital. People with congenital conditions are attracted to bodybuilding  ;)

You have to remember than life expectancy numbers are based on when you are born.  Both of these men far outlived the life expectancy rate for that era.

Yknow, its not just bodybuilders who only live to 80. You seem to think the average life span of a person is 100 years or somethign, well it aint.

So croakin between 70-80 aint bad.

Exactly.  After 80, it's all genetics.  A healthy lifestyle may prevent you from dying or being sickly in your 50's, 60's, and 70's, but beyond that you're fighting old age, not heart disease, diabetes, etc, etc.

I have one set of grandparents who are healthy and approaching 100, so I'm pretty optimistic on this score!  :D

I don't seem to think anything. The average life expectancy of a North American is between 77-80.

I don't expect health freaks to life forever and not die from what kills human beings.

The fact remains that bodybuilders seem to die either just making it into average or below.

One would like to think that the healthy lifestyle they led , or claimed to lead, would have translated itself into not dying at the same time..or younger than..an average Joe.

Reg Park died from melanoma. That = not BB related, unless you count excess tanning as a BB activity.

I know he did. I am not saying that bodybuilding necessarily kills em...I'm simply observing that the vast majority of those individuals who were held aloft as examples of human health and flourishing did not live to reach the average life expectancy of a North American. Although seeing as Africans kill each other for fun...Reg probably lived beyond the normal life expectancy of a South African.

There does appear to be a correlation with the advent of widespread steroid use and more health complications with subsequent generations. We can only wait and see if the Pumping Iron generation reach the national average.

The modern drug addicts are probably fucked..

Simple.....like anything else, you abuse it and it will abuse you. I'd be more concerned about the insulin usage than the AAS usage.
