bike or treadmill....?
« on: March 08, 2008, 02:57:37 AM »
What do you guys think of it?

What is better, for example in your morning cardio?

bike does put some stress on the legs especially the morning after your leg workout...

I think from a calorie burning point of view, treadmill is most likely better, due to the fact that you have to support your bodyweight whereas a bike is supporting it for you. But at that being said, i prefer bike. More gentle on the knees and ankles.

Also, after a leg workout i wont do any cardio the next day. Just feels weird getting up to do cardio when your legs are really sore from a workout. Seems like you are undoing all of your hard work. Probably doesnt make a difference though :-\
No doubt about it...

ideally, neither.  Go for the rowing maching or the elliptical-both are full body movements and consume more energy.  Of the two though, I would take the treadmill.

Depends what you are using it for. The treadmill is better at fat burning , the bike is better for fitness. The bike allows interval training whereas for excess fat depletion the treadmill far out shines the bike. Gotta agree with the rower and the ultimate fat burner - the stairmaster.

Eliptical or treadmill over stationary bike any day.

Far better to propell your entire body through space while doing cardio than it is to sit on your ass and pedal.

Ya, elliptical > treadmill > bike

Anything'll work with the right amount of work tho, if you have a strong preference for one over the other and it doesn't cause injuries go for it. Bike isn't as good but can be good if used in HIIT/Spinning fashion.

For people with lower back and lower body problems, yes it is.  It is also great for low impact but high intensity cardio.

Of course it is, in terms of the big picture that is both the workout and injuries. The treadmill's as good or better in terms of the exercise but can be very tough on the bod.

In terms of fat-burning running's better than treadmill and most other things, but it's hard on the joints.

no thats wrong.   you will burn more total fat calories while running than while walking, but youll also burn up muscle tissue, which you wouldnt burn while walking, and that results in less fat burning throughout the entire day. so the little increase in calorie expenditure during exercise is at the cost of a big decrease in expenditure for an extended period of time.

best fat burning= low intensity.

Running's great for anyone, including BBs. The whole idea of muscle loss is a generalization and not necessarily true, it would also depend on the distances run, which you've neglected to consider.

One of the most frustrating things about trying to figure out what to do in the gym is sorting out all the differing opinions everyone has. Personally I hedge my bets and do both low and high intensity on different equipment. I do elliptical the most, then the stairmaster, and finally the bike. I don't like the treadmill that much and the bike is the least strenuous. Steady-state some days, interval some days, consistent high intensity others. Mixing it up keeps it different and gives you a little bit of everything rather than "No, this is the ONLY way to do it."

stairmaster is king of the cardio equipment, id rate xtrainer 2nd then treadmill ..... i wouldnt use anything else...... theres just somthing about the stair master that knocks the fuck out of you.. improved my legs no end cuts wise last time i stepped on stage , was night and day from just a few month prior

how much u wanna do and how hard u wanna do it all depend on what your goals are,,, just generaly looking good or gettn ripped... if your wanting to be dripping in veins you have to do whatever is necessary to get the last few ounces of fat off, even if it means 2hrs plus each day

Actually, that was already said: doing what inspires you the most is the most important thing, followed by all the rest. It's pretty simple: ready the opinions then decide for yourself based on trial and error.

As far as which works better, it's fairly clear based on various measures, it's not opinion. With an increasingly larger sample of exeriences you'll start to notice that the overall opinions tend to corroborate what objectives measures show.

I'm calling bullshit!  burning muscle only happens if #1 you have no carbs in you're blood stream or #2 you have very little or no fat stores.  Otherwise, jog if you can and get that heart beating for maximum calorie burnage.
Most are all show no go!

Don`t forget,it`s not just about burning calories and losing bodyweight...........it`s about decreasing bodyfat if you consider yourself a bodybuilder.

Losing weight is easy, losing fat while retaining mass is a bit more tricky.
