Yes Tim...I was at that AAU A where Rufus won...it was held in Mass...were you there? Rufus was big as a house...I recall in clothes he looked small...onstage he was a giant!

Do you remember Pete Miller from Illinois? He won the AAU A in the early 90's...I trained at his gym...enormous legs
No,I wasn`t at that show............I beleive it was held in Worcester if I`m not mistaken.

I do remember Miller also.

The AAU still ran the Mr. A for years.........up until 1999.

The NPC started running the Nationals in 1982.........the 1982 AAU Mr. America was Rufus Howard and Jeff King won in 1983.

Well, if the AAu ran the Mr. America up until 99 then my case has been made-they fucked it up royally because I cannot name ONE Mr. A past the 80's.......In fact the only winners I can name are King, Meeko and Dufrasne (SP?). All 80's.

Weider, Arnold, the NPC  and others are the ones who put BBing on the map, not the AAU. The NPC had been doing the Mr. America with the AAU's blessing because the AAU owned the name-but once money started being made-big money-then all the sudden the AAU wants to try to take the America over-no work, just profits.

That is why they are idiots-and the final outcome proves my point. The AAU were not good for BBing.

Rufus Howard was a big dude, he was at the 1989 LA Open in Culver City-when Arnold made a suprise visit-big dude.

Johnny,I definately agree, when the NPC Nats came about, the Mr. A title lost a lot of its former prestige since so many of the best guys went to the NPC.

I have no clue who won after Matt Dufresne either.

We had a guy named Steve Henneberry in San Diego (later "Tower" on American Gladiators) who went in the AAU Mr America in either 89 or 90. This guy could not place in the top 5 in the local NPC shows (So. Cal, San Diego, etc) and he WON his height class at the AAU Mr. America. I thnk there were only a few people even in his weight class but cannot recall exactly.

Now that really shows how bad the AAU was in the end......  ;D

Actually the AAU wasn't doing too well with bodybuilding at the beginning either.

Bodybuilding contests were usually held in conjunction with olympic lifting events and only after the lifting events were completely finished. I actually recall a few bodybuilding contests starting way after midnight and leaving the auditorium just as the sun was coming up.

To my best recollection the new organization was developed due to this olympic lifting association and also to the fact that the AAU could not provide financial assistance in the way of travel funds to the bodybuilders because all those funds were supporting the other AAU sports ..... I believe that it was the swimmers who drained that pot dry one year and that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

I was at that meeting in Santa Monica where we voted to break away from the AAU, but I'm having a difficult time recalling the top five guys who did all the work in setting the new organization up. The one person I can recall is Jerome Weise who had the mental capacity to get  all the paper work done.

Can anyone name the rest of the men who set up the new organization. And was it even called the NPC at that exact moment of time?

In the end...bad.

In the 70's...the best

Yes, Hoffman was the guy that put BBing behind all the olympic lifting-that was his fault.

As for the NPC original name-it was not National Physique Committie, but National Physique Association, or something close to that.

Someone PM Joe Roark, he will have that answer.

In the 70's...the best

Yes, because the NPC was running the show this during this time period, not the AAU. The NPC, along with Weider and Arnold, are by far the biggest factors in making BBing successful.

54lbs?  Ouch.  I gained 7kgs in a week following my contest and was holding enough water in my calves for my ankles to disappear!  Can hardly imagine how much food that guy must have eaten.

My record was 33 lbs in a week, and I had that same feeling in my legs...like they were gonna explode!

I`ve heard of a lot of those guys, but had no clue they won the America except for Joe Deangelis but I had no idea when he won.

Back in `74 I went to Boston to compete in my fist power meet at the Boston YMCA,it took forever, and at about midnight the physique contest started.

A single light bulb hung over a basketball hoop,a black backdrop, and a small podium.

Len Archambault won the show, and his then training partner and future Mr. USA and Hulk stunt double,Manuel Perry took second.

Hoffman tacked bodybuilding onto the end of powerlifting and Olympic lifting because it brought in the most money as far as ticket sales and entry fees, but he cared little for the sport calling bodybuilders "mirror athletes".

Th best contests I`ve attended and competed in, were in the `70`s...........Mountain Park Amusement Park in Holyoke Mass.

Muscle control expert and IFBB judge,Ed Jubinville would put on the show............no admission,no entry fee,and would supply the trophies out of his own pocket.

Great guy who never got enough credit for all that he did for the sport.

I saw Arnold there,as well as a young Lou Ferrigno, and Franco as well as tons of other pros and upcoming guys.

I am even in the movie Pumping Iron in a crowd scene as that is where they filmed Franco and the hot water bottle stunt as well as Katz guest posing and a bit of the local contest too.

Great days!!

Sorry for rambling and going off on a tangent!!  LOL  ::)

Didn't know Perry was from east

Hoffman sucked

Jubinville...hey Tim...did you know Joe Leonetti? He was in Mt Park scene in PI

Muscle control expert and IFBB judge,Ed Jubinville would put on the show............no admission,no entry fee,and would supply the trophies out of his own pocket.

Great guy who never got enough credit for all that he did for the sport.

He was east coast distributor for Weider until he got f---ed over, naturally
I saw Arnold there,as well as a young Lou Ferrigno, and Franco as well as tons of other pros and upcoming guys.

Ron mangum, Paul Sagnella, Caesar Juliani, Jay Silva (both dead), etc!

I am even in the movie Pumping Iron in a crowd scene as that is where they filmed Franco and the hot water bottle stunt as well as Katz guest posing and a bit of the local contest too.

Was it true that Katz would always get huge ovations? And Ferrigno would not GP bc he wanted too much money from Ed? Also, he was gonna compete...but backed out when he saw how cut one of the entrants was?

Great days!!

Sorry for rambling and going off on a tangent!!  LOL  ::)

Never heard of him Mike.

As far as the other questions and comments from you........I didn`t know Joe or Pete Leonetti, but saw them compete in Holyoke.

Perry was from the Boston area and trained with Lenny Archambault and a huge guy named berry Blemis,Blemis made a yogurt commercial for Breyers back in the day looking huge.

Saw Ronny Magnum many times...........even Franco was amazed at his physique.

I also saw Joe Ugolik beat Ray Mentzer in Holyoke for the IFBB Jr. Mr. America contest.

Saw Jay Silva once in Worcester in his first contest at Mechanics Hall..........he couldn`t pose at all, wore a tight choker type beaded necklace on stage and when he hit a crab,it popped and a hundred beads rolled around onstage.........he placed though!!  LOL  :)

He was Manny Perrys cousin by the way.

Too bad about Silva and Juliani.........same type of thing happened to Frank Wainwright from New Jersey........remember him?

Katz was always a big hit at Mt. Park and is still a great guy to this day IMO.

As far as Louie goes,I saw him at the show in Holyoke when he was an unknown..............jus t known in NYC at the time.

He had a huge crowd around him and he towered over the throng of people...........he was humongous to me back then.

He was gonna` compete but saw Leon Brown who was literally ripped to shreds and he chickened out.............big ego,no guts.

Saw Mike Mentzer there,as well as Gene Massey,Franklyn Greene,Tony Carrol,Elliot Gilchrist.............da mn I`m getting fucking old dude!  ::)

Never heard of him Mike.

Yeah...placed just behind Manny in 78 A Tall class...won by Manny...Pearson overall
as far as the other questions and comments from you........I didn`t know Joe or Pete Leonetti, but saw them compete in Holyoke.

Pete had gigantic legs...Joe did some time for shooting his boss in the knees on railroad bc he'd swoop down on the workers in his small plane!

Perry was from the Boston area and trained with Lenny Archambault and a huge guy named berry Blemis,Blemis made a yogurt commercial for Breyers back in the day looking huge.

Archambeault=Zane-like

Saw Ronny Magnum many times...........even Franco was amazed at his physique.

Really?

Jow L went up to Franco, tried to identify with him:"Hey, Franco...I am like you...from Italy...you think I can be like you?"

"Psshaw...never" said Franco

"Fuck you,"said Joey...and believe me, if Franco wanted to throw down with him...it;'d be a good one...

also saw Joe Ugolik beat Ray Mentzer in Holyoke for the IFBB Jr. Mr. America contest.

I sometimes trainn at Nick U's gym hewre in CT

saw Jat Silva once in Worcester in his first contest at Mechanics Hall..........he couldn`t pose, wore a tight choker type beaded necklace on stage and when he hit a crab,it popped and a hundred beads rolled around onstage.........he placed though!!  LOL  :)

Silva got his head cut off by drug cartel back then

He was Manny Perrys cousin by the way.
Too bad about Silva and Juliani.........same type of thing happened to Frank wainwright........rememb er him?

Juliani shot by druggers...he tried toi screw them...only 21

Wainright, from PA and contemporary of Frank Calta...was shot to death in a gas station altercation...great tall bb

Katz was always a big hit at Mt. Park and is still a great guy to this day IMO.

Mike is salt of the earth

As far as Louie goes,I saw him at the show in Holyoke when he was an unknown..............jus t known in NYC at the time.

That musta been cool...did the crowd freak at his size?

He had a huge crowd around him and he towered over the throng of people...........he was humongous to me back then.

He was gonna` compete but saw Leon Brown who was literally ripped to shreds and he chickened out.............big ego,no guts.

THAT's who scared him...thought so

Saw Mike Mentzer there,as well as Gene Massey,Franklyn Greene,Tony Carrol,Elliot Gilchrist.............da mn I`m getting fucking old dude!  ::)

Shite...Elliott and Fred Jarrett both competed in my Northern states show only a few years ago...had them both up at the microphone...Gilchrist actually placed in some shows with Arnold himself

I competed in the same show with Gilchrist a couple of times.............Southe rn Stes in Lauderdale.

The guy doesn`t fly or drive so he takes a bus to every show he does...........in Canada they pay his way when he competes at a certain show.,,,,,,,,,,,,,nice guy.

Leonetti broke his trophy backstage at Mt. Park...........forget which one of the brothers, but those guys looked like some bad dudes.

You`re right,Wainwright was from Pa.,but got shot at a car wash not to be picky!!  :)

I thought Silva was shot as well??

Pat Hayes got shot in the neck bouncing in L.A. but recoverd.

The crowd was amazed at Lous size, but he was a jerk IMO.

Everytime I saw him which was a lot of times,he acted like an asshole to people.

Warren Fredericks was gonna` compete at Mt. Park but Ed J. woulldn`t let him........IFBB vs. WBBG or some shit.

Fredericks was a true monster in person.

Leon Brown won that show and every single bodypart trophy that day.............they also used his pic from that show in Pumping Iron.

The guy doesn`t fly or drive so he takes a bus to every show he does...........in Canada they pay his way when he competes at a certain show.,,,,,,,,,,,,,nice guy.

We never charged him, either...a legend

Leonetti broke his trophy backstage at Mt. Park...........forget which one of the brothers, but those guys looked like some bad dudes.

Hadda be Joe...he did body work on my Mustang when I was 17...and was so ignorant thought I wasn't going to pay him...called my house and threatened my sister...my father came down and didn't give a fuck who the Hell he was...but cooler heads prevailed...Joe borders on retardate status

You`re right,Wainwright was from Pa.,but got shot at a car wash not to be picky!!  :)

Bravo...you are right

I thought Silva was shot as well??

Shot and then decapatated with his head left in the back seat of his wife's car

Pat Hayes got shot in the neck bouncing in L.A. but recoverd.

Hayes...sick dude...still around?

The crowd was amazed at Lous size, but he was a jerk IMO.

Has not changed, I guess...forever blaming the world for failing to measure up...

Warren Fredericks was gonna` compete at Mt. Park but Ed J. woulldn`t let him........IFBB vs. WBBG or some shit.

Likely...think he died of kidney failure some years ago...I woulda let him compete...specially after how Weider screwed ed

Fredericks was a true monster in person.

Very vascular...was one of Lurie's, as was Louie

Leon Brown won that show and every single bodypart trophy that day.............they also used his pic from that show in Pumping Iron.

Yes!!
