Pats Making Major Moves
« on: February 27, 2009, 11:31:35 AM »
I think they are getting ready to trade Cassel and to bring in someone big.  Vrabel was just traded to KC and Paxton to Denver.  Trading Vrabel is big.  They are making cap room for something.  Vrabel, Paxton and Cassel are worth over 21 million in cap space.

Last season he was hurt, but the year before he had 10+ sacks I believe.  Keep in mind Pioli and Mcdaniels are now in KC and Denver.  I think they are making room for someone.  They have a bunch of rookie lb's.  Here are the current lb's with Vrabel gone....

Rookies:
Mayo*
Guyton*
Crable
Rudd

Vets
AD Thomas*
Bru (he's done)*
Alexander*
Banta Cain

They are making moves for something.

I'm wondering what team will trade two first rounders for Cassel. That's a heavy price. KC??

I don't know....Cassel is thought of as a top ten QB in the NFL according to Adam Shefter.  His numbers back that up, he is young and he has the size, speed and smarts. And most important he is a good guy.  No crying, no bullshit, he just plays.  Considering what the Chargers got for Eli ( and considering how hard it is to find a good QB), I think someone gives up major coin for him.  Here is my prediction:

Pioli trades the number three draft pick to NE for Vrabel and Matt Cassel.  Pats take Adam Curry or trade off the pick for a slew of picks to add to their current slew of picks.

Cassel in KC with Larry Johnson will soon give the Chargers a run for their money for the top of the AFC west.

There are three scenarios that I have been predicting:

Cassel in a three way trade for Peppers

Cassel to KC for the third (in which the pats take Curry)

Cassel to KC...they get the third pick and trade for Suggs or they trade off the pick for multiple picks in 09 and 10

KC fans don't know what they got in Pioli....the guys a fucking beast.

Or the Pats get the number 34 pick and ........................ .............well lets hope there is more to this. Its not a bad deal but only one pick? They do create a ton more cap space.

They are not done yet.  Also, Matt might not have wanted to go to some of the other teams interested.  This is icing on the cake. If the pats got greedy, they could have been stuck with the guy and his 14 million dollar cap hit.  That 34th pick could turn out to be a pro-bowler.

As it stands now the pats have picks:

23

34

46

38 (San D)

68

70 (comp pick for Asante)

Plus all their day two picks.

Thats six picks in the top 100 players of the draft.  Keep in mind, Cassel was a UFA that was drafted in the 6th round with a 14 million dollar cap hit.  They helped Pioli out and they did what they had to do.  I'd rather be safe than sorry.  Also, we don't know what was had for Vrabel and there was a third team involved in this.  This deal might get a whole lot more interesting.  Cassel could have walked and refused to sign the tender.  Maybe this will bring peppers here.

Everyone called Bill crazy for giving up a 2nd rounder for Welker......2 1000 yard season in the slot and a pro bowl later it does not look like such a bad move, eh?
