Well, the angry face emoji was a show of disapproval of mugging/rolling gay folks...not specifically to your grandfather. It would be interesting to know exactly what he meant by rolling gays. In the 60's and 70's it was a far too common occurrence not only concerning gay folks but also among street walkers (hookers) who would roll their clients. The probably still goes on.

I think we all realise this, but the problem is that the mechanism behind it was never thought through

I mean, there's always been nancy-boys or whatever, but they would have been pretty isolated - maybe they'd find each other in cities or whatever, maybe even have their own night clubs or something, but they would have still felt like a small, underground sub-group.  Now though, with the InterWebz, you can find 10,000 others at the click of a mouse, and this makes them pretty shouty and brave

A harmless example is the big butt ladies that some GetBiggers enjoy - 20/30 years ago, who among us would have confessed to being partial to the dump-truck build?  But once you realise it's not just you, then you're away LOL.  And when the same systems are used to help people organise against oppressive governments that's also A Good Thing
