In Jiu-Jitsu they call the rear naked choke mata leon which literally means lion kill, i.e., that if the choke is done correctly you can put out a lion. Also, when a lion kills it's prey it doesn't tear it apart but locks on to the neck until it's prey is unconscious or goes down so the others can tear it apart. Of course putting a lion to sleep is a bit of an embellishment but the point is that no matter how big you are you still have to breath. I saw a video where a 13 year old boy was fighting a full grown man much larger than himself and the boy got to the man's back (piggy back style) and choked him unconscious using the mata leon.
GSP , BJ Penn, scrawny Ken Florian, and any decent purple belt in Jiu-Jitsu will easily choke that giant mess Kovacs unconscious with a minimal of effort.
Watch the first episode of TUF on the net where they feature the heavy weights. Watch the first fight. These are big guys who are actually train in MMA. Watch what happens when they gas, which happens very quickly. All that muscle means nothing. It's almost embarrassing to watch. These big guys talking tough before their fight bent over resting their hands on their knees on national TV sucking wind having loss their will to continue and just want the clock to run out.
Being big and strong does not translate into fighting ability. Just like being in great condition does not mean you can fight. Fighting is a skill. Strength and stamina are a physical attributes. They certainly complement any athlete but in and of themselves are insufficient in being a good fighter.
Kovacs vs. GSP: Kovacs gases half way through a punch. Falls to the ground gasping for air. A confused and bewildered GSP looks to the ref for direction. The ref calls an end to the bout and the GSP camp ambles out looking around somewhat perplexed and puzzled by what just happened. A medical crew has now surrounded a still prone Kovacs administering oxygen and wondering how they are going to hoist this grotesque mass of flesh out of the cage.
Captain Equipoise = Knows what he is talking about.
