Ultra-marathons: Eating junk food is absolutely necessary ... if you're Dean Karnazes

March 29th, 2009 3:20 pm MT.

Dean Karnazes - not your typical runner's bodyHave you every been able to justify eating an extra large Hawaiian pizza entirely by yourself? Most people haven't. Unless you're Dean Karnazes.

In an act of pure necessity, Dean Karnazes can cram 12 slices of Hawaiian pizza (3,500 calories in total - two days worth of calories) into his 5'9", 152 lbs frame. What in the world could cause someone to justify scarfing down an extra large Hawaiian pizza entirely by themselves? Their last meal? Being tortured? Well, not quite. Try running thirty miles a night... yeah, you heard right... while the rest of the world sleeps, Dean Karnazes racks up four hours of non-stop heel-to-toe locomotion...for an average of thirty miles a night.

Dean Karnazes has become somewhat of a superhero in the extreme trail running world. Dean, a 47 year-old San Francisco native, has earned world-wide recognition for his incredible running accomplishments, most of which have required an incredible amount of calorie intake. As Dean explains in his autobiography:

"My body fat is less than 5 percent, so there's not a whole lot of reserve to draw upon"..."Without massive caloric binges - burgers, french fries, ice cream, pies and cakes - my metabolism would come to a screeching halt and I'd be unable to accomplish my mission."

In the November 2006 issue of Runner's World Magazine, he was recognized for his incredible feats. Dean has also been recognized as one of TIME Magazine's "Top 100 Most Influential People in the World", with accomplishments that include (most recently):

-Running 50 marathons in 50 days, (finishing with the New York Marathon)

-Running the 135-mile "Badwater" Ultramarathon in Death Valley

-Running a marathon to the South Pole in 40-below temperatures

-Running multiple "Western States 100" races (100 mile races)

...and on and on and on.

Anyone who hears about the amazing feats of Dean Karnazes can admit that he's an inspiration. For some, his inspiring accomplishments take them even a step further; wanting to be like him. So the question is, do you want to run like Dean Karnazes? Well, here's good news; you won't have to go too far from home. It just so happens that Dean has left his inspiration (along with his footprints) on the soil of our beautiful Wasatch mountains. During his exploits of the year 2005, Dean participated in the Utah version of the Western States 100, known as the Wasatch Front 100, a 100-mile race held right here in Utah. The Wasatch Front 100 is held each year on the weekend after Labor Day. The race extends from Layton, Utah to The Homestead in Midway, Utah and covers the gorgeous Wasatch Mountain scenery that local Utahns are so fortunate to enjoy.

The Salt Lake area has its own version of "extreme trail running". Thirty-four miles east of Salt Lake City, in beautiful Park City, half-crazed locals endure the punishing and beautiful single-track trails between Deer Valley Ski Resort and The Canyons Ski Resort, in what is known as the Mid-Mountain Marathon. Since 2005, the number of marathon participants has slowly increased in this little-known marathon experience. Despite its underground following, the trail that is used for the Mid-Mountain Marathon has been recognized by NEMBA (New England Mountain Bike Association) as an "Epic Trail", an honor only currently bestowed on a total of 24 national bike/running trails throughout the nation

He looks better than I though he would. Not massive, but definitely ripped.

lol.

See, here's YOUR issue:  You're young, and have bad acne NW.  You think it's something youre eating.  Plain and simple, it's not.  It's your age.  Believe me, it will go away on it's own in time.

Yes, sugar perhaps causes a few zits here and there, but it's not your cause.  It's your age friend.  Just hang in there.  You'll wake up someday and say, hmmm..  where'd it all go??
