Rest day questions
« on: September 18, 2010, 12:38:42 PM »
I have been training with vigorous intensity for about 6 months with great results and have taken one day off per week(once in while two) and really hate to take more time off than this. This weekend I am taking three days to rest since I just wrapped up my PCT after a short PH cycle.
question #1 Is three days enough rest for full recovery?...the gym is my life and I just don't know what to do without my workout...lol
question #2 Can I still do cardio on rest days and during 'time off' for recovery?
question #3 Obviously I don't need to take preworkout NO type supps on days off but what about creatine? Should it be continued on days off to maintain levels? or skip it till workout days? I do continue using protien and bcaa's on rest days but I am unsure of what supps are only needed on days I workout.
Thanks for any advice..if it matters I am 40. I weigh 250 at the moment after topping out at 268 during cycle.

Why not just take a week off? If you have been training that hard for 6 months, your body could use the break. You will probably even come back stronger and more motivated. You can still do some easy cardio, but i would just rest the whole week. In regards to cardio on off days when you get back, that would depend on your goals IMO. You can take creatine on off days, but i wouldn't do any of that loading bullshit.

take days off as you need them. dont workout if your still sore. if you arent stronger than your last workout, you either didnt rest long enough, your diet was fucked, or your training needs to be re evaluated. if your stronger than your last workout, then your on the right path.

7-10 days would be ideal.  Light cardio would be fine.  3 days isn't really considered a 'break'.

Thanks for the repies...I just don't feel like my day is complete without gettin' crazy at the gym so I will just have to bite the bullet and take a week. I do feel good today after my 3 day break, and I do feel stronger each week as I always up the intensity each week with more weight, reps or sets.

I usually take a least a week off every month or so......don't be afraid to take a layoff....it is only a week and you are going to come back to the gym with a renewed enthusiasm for working out.....remember.....you grow when you rest!!!!

1)   Take a good 2 weeks off. Full recovery can take up to a month depending on natural recovery abilities and how much stress on the CNS was involved in your regular 6 day a week workouts. If you find that you have lost noticeable muscle size and strength with a 1 or 2 week layoff period than chances are you haven't been training correctly in the first place. You may lose a bit of muscle tone and a little strength, only natural, but nothing to any great extreme. I will take a good 2 weeks off after a 8 to 12 week training cycle. Also good for the mental outlook and approach when getting back into the swing of regular training again.

2)  Would suggest walking/hiking in the out of doors as a light form of cardio. Stretching, as a regular semi daily activity and Yoga style movement actually help the muscle system recover. If familiar with Martial Arts, than any form of light Kata's can also be done.

2) Creatine seems to have it's best affects felt when cycled, I have been told. Taking a few weeks away from it may be a good idea, even when on a regular training plan. Athletes do this. Creatine also tends to encourage the body to hold water for some BB'ers. Hence the soft and  bloated muscle look on some BBers. Intakes of whey proteins by all means. With a liquid form of a multi vit/min included. Extra Vitamin C course.   Good Luck.

4-6 weeks off per year or a week off after every 9-12 weeks is a very good rough baseline that would apply to pretty much everyone.
