I had a friend in the military from Wisconsin. He used to brag about how "progressive" Wisconsin was/is. Now when I talk to him, he has moved just to the right of me on the political spectrum. Live among the shit and your attitude will change.
For the most part I don't think most Americans give a shit what people do in their private lives. The problem is we have a small % of people that think they get to dictate what is right and what is wrong. Unfortunately most of that % are politicians.
