Nature is cruel and mean.
I always lol @ people that think animals are all cute cuddly pets.

Nature is more indifferent than anything else.

In the grander scheme of things, yes, exactly right.
I was speaking from a strictly human perspective, people like to look at nature romantically, make it seem like something its not. To civilized socitety, nature is brutal, and should be feared and respected. But its not - people like to look at animals like theyre fuzzy and cuddly, poor innocent creatures that wouldnt ever hurt a fly.

People are just too stupid to see the correlation.  Killing a cow and making a steak is no different then a lion killing a zebra.  We just like to think that we as humans are humane about our killing.  ::)

You should know why humans over-react to shark attacks Stark...you're the expert! I've seen your site - you know the psychology as to why humans over-react to certain situations with fear/outrage/disgust.

It has everything to do with three compounding factors: the randomness of the event, the gruesomeness of the event, and the helplessness of the people involved.

Here's an example of something that would generate little outrage from society: a woman dies of lung cancer in New York City. Why? It's not random (thousands will get and die from the big C), it's not very gruesome or abrupt (cancer takes a long time to kill people, relative to a shark, let's say) and people will probably say she deserved it for smoking all those years.

Contrast it to this: a baby is pulled out of its crib by a marauding bear and eaten in front of the parents. That's shocking, and will grab headlines. How often do bears go marauding through a house? Almost never! And isn't the thought of seeing a baby being eaten by a bear quite gruesome? And finally, both the baby and parents - the victims - are completely helpless to do anything. This news headline will strike fear and
outrage in the populace. After this headline runs, you're more likely to raise money to kill bears or create bear-proof-cribs, than you are to raise money to stop smoking.

Human nature.

That's why we fear sharks so much. The kills are gruesome, and quite random versus a car accident or heart disease. And finally, don't we all truly feel helpless in the water? We can't see below us, we know it (the water) can very easily kill us in an instant...it's a breeding ground for cheap news headlines.

There...now you can all write newstories...enjoy!
Also, the way they look, they glide around like airplanes---airplanes with huge mouths. With dark, cold unfeeling eyes. And rows of teeth. They don't look like the pet gold fish...they have a very sinister look to them...in many instances, like with GW's, Makos, and blues, it's like a harbinger of death.

In 8th grade our school had a PETA rep come in and talk to us, they showed us the the obligatory animal testing vids. I asked them why is it that PETA focuses on the cute, cuddly, furry animals, when there are millions of sharks being killed just for their fins for sharkfin soup. She had no answer. But we all know the answer---sharks are demonized because of their appearance, and they eat people.
and like all predators, they tend to evoke fear. But, man still hasn't conquered the seas like he has the land and air. And we are at the mercy of said predators....

**I like sharks and venomous snakes, but scared the fuck of bears, they look like big dumb dogs, that don't known their own strength---like the dude from Mice and Men.

shit, according to that description, this was a fucking Horrific attack.....the surfer didn't look that big of a guy either, but the bad thing is, that monster shark have a taste for human now and it will come back very soon on that same spot to look for more surfers......that part in Autralia is now the leading coast for Great white attacks. there were at least 5 fatal attacks in 10 months......your best bet is stay the fuck out of these waters......
Chances are probably not. Probably mistakes him for a seal. Humans compared to most great white prey have very little blubber or meat on them. A leg ain't gonna Jack for a GW, nor is biting into the midsection where you have the organs. Plus, GW prey tends to be more proliferate than random suffers, and they can move to warmer or colder waters....

100% spot on.

There are however a growing number of people out there that rather look at the nature of this world directly in the eye and do the complete opposite the world and especially the western world wants us to believe - death does exist and its okay to talk about it, there is nothing abnormal or horrific about death - its clinical precise and quite literally the end or the beginning.
But in todays society we are being tought from very early on that you do not talk about dying or death, everybody goes to great length to make sure you don't like like you are getting older / dying its not okay to call people old anymore you are getting "older" or you are 100 years young - death by the western decadent society is obzene and in a way something dirty a tabu you should not talk about.

I think we need to change that we need to open our mind and eyes to the reality of our existence.

I've dived with white sharks and there are anything but what you described them above, the movies want you to believe that - a white shark is very careful very shy you can see that from their behavior they are not some none thinking monster.
not one shark had any interest in me or the cage - they kept a watchfull eye on me at all times however.
Shark attacks are always a mistake - I know we self rightious humans want to believe different but its a fact we just don't really taste that nice.

Atleast you might be getting to the real story here, if they don't have an interest in humans why all the attacks on humans? As much as you guys want to believe it's nature fighting back, odds are there's something else going on.

At the end of the day it might be as simple as this, "meat is meat".  Shark was probably looking for seal but once he took a bite, he decided it was not all that bad, doesn't have that fishy taste.
