used the proceeds from replica watches to buy my 2nd rolex (s/s coke dial gmt master II) and my panerai.  

side by side the rolex's are kinda easy to tell... hour markers, color of type and markers, ect... the easiest is just by the bracelet. The panerai side by side was a lil more difficult, but again the hour markers have slight differences.

replica watches have sweeping second hands, but there's no comparing the sweep in a replica swiss automatic to say a 31 jewel zenith movement.... to the un-savy, anything that doesn't tick-tock 'must be real'. lol.

i'd rather wear an automatic Tissot than a 'replica' rolex.

unless you have full papers and can check it out from maker to present day don't touch it

one of my family is a watch nut and has bought many as its a good way to pass on money to your kids and family as they hold value if genuine and the tax won't chase watches round all day

however you need to know what you are looking for

as for rolex you can pick up genuine but low end ones for a grand. obviously you can pay a lot more.

best bet- take it to 3 jewellers -  legit jewellers - tell them you have been left it and want to ensure its in good nick or if it needs any work doing- they will also then value it- with the work done and without- if they think there is work in it they will run round for you- if they think you are just looking to e-bay it they won't give a shit

The best part is a Rolex gives shittier time than a $2 watch.  Most automatic watches lose time quickly based on the mechanics, some last 24 hours before needing to be rewinded, others up to 6 days but then you are spending $100,000+ for them.
