Federal drug agents conducted surprise inspections of National Football League team medical staffs on Sunday as part of an ongoing investigation into prescription drug abuse in the league. The inspections, which entailed bag searches and questioning of team doctors by Drug Enforcement Administration agents in cooperation with the Transportation Security Administration, were based on the suspicion that NFL teams dispense drugs illegally to keep players on the field in violation of the Controlled Substances Act, according to a senior law enforcement official with knowledge of the investigation.

If the doctors are practicing unethically, then they deserve the appropriate punishment. Just because youre a medical doctor for a sports team, it does not mean youre above the ethical code of all doctors around the world. A doctor is a doctor and is bound by the same oath of every other doctor, no matter if they work for a sports team or work in a hospital. So, lets sue and take away a doctors license who is practicing unethically in a hospital, but allow a doctor who is practically unethically for a sports team, to keep his license. Yes, makes perfect sense.  

It is clearly idiotic to assume that sport players and the people associated with them are "above the law." Haven't we seen too much of this in the past where famous people (sport players, singers, actors) get off practically scott-free, while the average citizen would be paying out the ass.

I am happy that the DEA is coming down on medical staff who are practicing unethically.

Give me a break..   Sure, according to the law these docs 'are practicing unethically', but we all know what happens when doctors aren't prescribing anymore. The war on drugs is a lost one, so this law is a naive & symbolic one.

Practicing unethically can mean a broad range of behaviors. Are you saying that doctors should not be held to an ethical code? Are you saying that ethical codes followed by doctors are naive? 

You prescribe medication when you must. If youre prescribing for erroneous reasons, youre practicing unethically. Any other doctor, say, in a hospital, would be taken to task on this and would be put up for review. Thats a fact. These doctors should not get away with it because they are on a professional sports team.

And this really has little to do with a "war on drugs." We are not talking about some drug cartel selling crack. We are talking about licensed medical doctors practicing unethically. Plain and simple.

Um, dipshit, I don't decide what is ethical or not. Ethical guidelines set forth by the American Medical Association do. You don't need to decide what is ethical or unethical. That is why they have guidelines already established, genius. You must follow these ethical guidelines. If you don't, you can lose your license and the ability to practice medicine. These are OBJECTIVE ethical guidelines. Its not for me to decide what is ethical. Its the AMA or the appropriate people. If the appropriate people deem that an MD is being unethical, then he will be taken to task for it. All I was saying is that if they are shown to be practicing unethically, according to the AMA, then they will up for review. Youre obviously not too swift.

To answer your question right away, I think they should stand up against this law. There is a conflict between this law and the health of an individual. Prescribing PEDs isn't the same as prescribing medications, BUT an ambitious athlete might harm his health by using underground products for a number of reasons. When a doctor realizes this, then how 'ethic' is he/she by accepting this?
