You are correct, but the only model we have for life is what we see on earth.  Scientist want to discover life on another planet to see how it's different. 

Life on earth does not require oxygen to live, but it does require water, which is why the Mars discover is so important.

Personally, I don't think sending man to the moon was a waste of money because it was too expensive in 1969.  On the other hand, things like the Hubble telescope and the Mars rover have been well worth the money.
