To each their own. I don't view it as a "passive" emergency measure. To me, a passive emergency measure is carrying pepper spray, being aware of your surroundings, perhaps not going out late at night alone, especially if you're a female, having your keys in your hand before you approach your car.  Carrying a gun is more than just a "passive" measure. But, obviously, we think differently about the subject.

I got a couple guns and each time i have gotten one i head to the range and gun store to pick up ammo or some shit, just got all excited and wanted to pick up stuff and shoot you know...everytime these places are full of assholes in their "tactical" gear, lookin pissed off, cop like sunglasses, NRA or dont tread on me shirts all over and just over all uncomfortable places to be if your not "in the club". Gun culture is strange as fuck, I guess like any subculture is, but any time i visit places like that, it just makes me annoyed I even have a gun because finding just a nice cool calm place to use it at, is basically impossible...unless u can tolerate all the shit i mentioned and conversations about "how their guns are gonna get taken away" every 2 seconds in the background.

This experiment demonstrates what should be understood to be true.  There has been racial strife in this country for hundreds of years.  In the past 50 years we've seen a substantial rise in black crime AND a corresponding rise in police brutality to black Americans.  It's a cycle.  Blacks feel persecuted by cops so they exhibit behavior that makes them more worthy of the attention of law enforcement...which increases the persecution blacks feel....and on and on and on and on.

To me its not racist to be aware of your surroundings and to have an appropriate level of caution.  I will be more alert if a group of young black men walk towards my family on the street then I will if its a group of white grandmothers.  Is that racist or is that risk management?  Risk Mgt tells me I'm substantially less likely to get engaged in violent behavior from the grandmothers.
To be clear, I would also raise my level of caution and awareness if a group of young white men or Hispanic men approached me because they too represent a higher risk.  If a group of sexy women approached me I would appropriately raise my testosterone levels in response...assuming my wife wasn't looking.

Open carry is just too moronic and too "look at me". I think concealed carry is better, you got the element of surprise. Don't get me started on people carrying rifles openly. It's one of those things just because you can doesn't mean you should.
