The authors didn't indict the process, which surprised me given their conclusions. Could be beyond the scope of the project. When you start cutting off body parts I feel it takes a lot of justification. That's what I'm struggling with, I'm not seeing it.

I agree with you about the cognitive distinctions. You don't think you're mr.olympia but Ronnie Coleman says :

There is only one reason why I’m here and that is to serve God, and to do pretty much what he wants me to do. God is the person that put us here, and he put us here for a reason, and that reason is to serve him… It reiterates and confirms the reason why I’m Mr. Olympia, and the reason why I’m Mr. Olympia is because God has chosen that destiny for me. That makes it real easy for me to train.2

Do you feel it was bruce jenners destiny to cut off his penis and take estrogen? It looks like a crazy person to me.

I don't think imaginary Ceiling Cat has a destiny plotted out for anyone. To me, a lot of the things people say and do in the name of religion sound crazy. Why would someone put their body through what Ronnie put his body through to win a Freak Show Beauty Pageant? Does Ronnie actually believe God wanted him to destroy his joints, possibly take years off his life with a ridiculous, illegal drug regime so he could temporarily have big muscles and lift a lot of weight?  How many different baby's mama's does he have now?

I also think some of the baggage that comes along with transgenders is that there are many who don't really "pass" and  even after transitioning, society doesn't really accept them in their post-op sex.

I think these people are bullied and damaged as children. I suspect if that didn't occur and they simply had a positive self-image they wouldn't feel the need to do anything. A lot of bodybuilders have bully baggage too... ;)

Bruce Jenner was an Olympic hero and considered a heartthrob  throughout most of his 20s and 30s.

He's also a republican. :) It's a very strange thing. I assume the man is nuts because you'd have to be to not like himself. It's hard to imagine a more beautiful "man".

Does he seem more mentally healthy now? What do you think?

Obviously, I don't know the man, but his first family and second family both  described a husband who was apathetic and a father who was completely disengaged.  They have described the new Caitlyn as being more open, more responsive and move emotionally available. Are those things that signify improved mental health?

This is who Bruce Jenner was: "I was a dyslexic kid," he says, now in his nylon pants and gray USA Track & Field T-shirt, sitting back by the pool, the cameras still occupied with his wife and daughters. He failed second grade in Yorktown Heights, New York, and was plagued by low self-esteem: "I always thought everybody else was better than me." Then in the fifth grade he had a race at school, and he won. Jenner was the fastest, and he held on to that feeling for dear life.

That article goes on to say that from there on out, he pretty much dominated any sport he tried. He experienced pretty typical childhood insecurities and then went on to exceptional success, achievement and fame accompanied by adoration for his looks.

Seems like there had to be something more there.

I think a lot of celebrities have insecurities because their looks cannot be maintained.  He seemed to have a thing for plastic surgery.

Ken Patera thinks steroids did it  :)

“Do I think [Kris] emasculated him? Oh, God, yeah! Bruce had no control over Kris,” Ken said. Ken first advised Bruce on weightlifting techniques while both prepped for the 1972 Olympic games in Munich, where Bruce finished in 10th place in the decathlon. After four years of intense training, a pumped-up Bruce returned to win the gold medal at the 1976 Olympics. Anabolic steroids were legal for competitive use until 1975, and Ken thinks the chemicals could have triggered Bruce’s transition! “Maybe that flipped a switch in his brain,” Ken said. Bruce, 65 – who is being sued for wrongful death over a car crash – revealed he’s changing genders in an explosive interview with ABC’s Diane Sawyer.
