ceph,if you make yourself train in the morning no matter what,after a time it will become commonplace and not hard to do at all............just the first few weeks are tough,especially leg days.

Here's what you can do.  For starters don't let some Doc get you started on some SSRI's or Benzo's they are a recipe for disaster.  Instead get him to prescribe a low dose timed release beta blocker, by doing this you are keeping your body from experiencing any of the effects on your body of the anxiety.  The beta blocker blocks the effects of the excessive amounts of stress hormones produced by anxiety.  Then go buy a book on cognitive behavioral therapy and learn, or go to a good psychologist that can teach you CBT.

this is so true but so few people who bitch about time are willing to give it a try.  I get up at 4:15 every morning to hit the iron unless I'm sick or injured

Agreed. I'm at the gym around 6 am every morning. Gets it done with and nothing to worry about after work. More free time, etc. Plus it eliminates the after work crowd.

A job that requires sitting most of the time is terrible for your health. I did that for a long time even though I ran and lifted. Now I have a retirement job that requires standing and walking through a facility. I'm lucky if I sit for 15 minutes in 4 hours. After 4 weeks of this my wife noticed I was getting leaner.  Just the act of standing at work and walking at a slow pace for a shift contributes so much toward burning calories. One 8 hour shift I estimated I walked at minimum 15 miles. I also noticed my regular runs were easier.  It's just the difference between being a couch potato and exercising and being active and exercising.

When I'm finished with this current job and go back to being retired I'm going to still run and lift of course but I'm going to throw in a lot of walking too. Walking for me in addition to running/lifting is the magic bullet for me to stay lean.

- the degenerative eye effects of staring at a screen all day
- health risks of a sedentary lifestyle

etc.

does it ever get to you?  i kind of go crazy sitting at a desk all day, thinking about this stuff.  

i feel like the advised solutions: stretches or exercises every half hour, forcing oneself to get up and walk around the office, pausing to stare off in the distance to prevent myopia, are all palliative at best, and possibly worthless (not to mention impractical) at worst.  but even if such measures are important, trying to separate the good advice from the bad makes my head spin.

also, i don't feel like a small amount of repetitive activities in the gym can make up for a life of sitting all day otherwise.

On the other hand , I walk 8 to 10 hs a day  ,many days  I'm just  too tired to exercise after work.

thanks for all the advice, everyone (in particular, iwannabejacked and danielpaul -- interesting stuff).  i wasn't really looking for it in this thread, but i appreciate it nonetheless.

on the subject of morning workouts. i've forced myself to do them for months on end.  actually might have lasted over a year on one stint, actually.  always seem to slip back into the evening, however... anyone recommending morning workouts consider themselves a "night owl"?

I've trained before, after, and both before and after work.

Honestly, I am not a "morning person".  I feel like absolute shit in the morning, and many times have DRASTICALLY more energy in the evening.  That said, I noticed that when I workout in the morning, it can sort of "cure" my bad feelings.  Furthermore, when I work out in the evenings, I'm often disappointed as I don't feel the workout goes any better than my morning workouts.  Despite having more energy before to begin, the workout isn't really any better.

Hence, I usually try to workout in the morning.  However, just motivating myself to fight through the depressing "morning feelings" and get to the gym requires a tremendous amount of energy and generates a lot of stress for me, even the night before.  Thus I feel it's sort of a wash...  I actually think the ideal time to for me to workout is sort of in the middle of the day.  Another conflict with work life, sadly...

What i'm about to say, is not in response to this particular post, more of something general i've noticed from your posts. I think what you might struggle with is perspective?

Do you have any activities (apart from paid work) where you feel you are part of something bigger than yourself, or do you volunteer or anything like that? It might help to start, if you're not already, as it can put things into better perspective - i.e. you will see the 'size' (for want of a better term) of your problems in relation to bigger problems, and so on.

I know it's a bit simplistic, but it's worked for me in the past. Too much introspection is not healthy.

sorry wes, im up to 190 lbs now (worst shape of my life, probably) and the anxiety still won't going away.  i've got deeper problems than leptin deficiency...

anyway, you're one of the few who's been able to stay in good shape over the years -- do you have an active job or a desk job?

LOL!!  190lbs and your worst shape......well, suppose it's all relative.

I think the clothes I'm wearing weigh 190lbs.

For a period of like 5 months i was afraid of eating too less or in intervalls too long.
I panicked when without food for more than like 2 hrs.

Good, If I had to work 9-5 I would kill myself.  I don't want to elaborate on how I live the way I want to live but I find it utterly amazing how so few people actually rebel against wage slavery.  What you are feeling is what all people in that position feel (albeit many are unaware of these feelings as they remain in the unconscious) or they have found a way to be content with this form of indentured servitude (get drunk on weekend, gamble,fuck whores,walk their dog etc etc)  whatever takes the edge of the realisation they are slaves to people who despise them.  

The first thing you have to do to live the way you want is to truly let go of what other people think of you, as many wage slaves despise those who find alternate lifestyles that sees them escape the miserable existence they feel forced to endure.  Personally I find this easy, as the last thing I desire is to be liked by people who lack to fortitude to rebel against a system where the game is obviously rigged against them. Anyway, good luck dude,you seem like a smart guy and I am sure you will work it out.

i realize a lot of my thinking is irrational, but i still can't change it.  i think ultimately i need to educate myself and change my beliefs.  for example, researching health and fitness related topics instead of simply wondering for all eternity.  apart from research, that 'education' can certainly come from meeting more people and taking part in new activities.  i know that's not what you were getting at with your advice, but i can see your angle as well.

When I was a shipyard mechy fitter, all day could be classed as cardio... I used to laugh at the functional muscle threads, as I was a heavyweight bodybuilder using my muscle all day long, lifting and hitting things..

Now I'm an engineering surveyor and spend my day driving to sites, shine my torche round a crane or a lift etc

I have to realy watch what i eat now, beforehand it was hard to gain fat as I be sweating all day. My training is much more ache free these days too, a twinge used to take weeks/months to shift as it would be aggrevated at work, now I'm almost thinking of squating and deadlifting again.

Inject Gh in the morning. No more morning feelings and will keep you lean while you eat that KFC you ordered in the office. :)))
