One would think that training for basic personal, fitness needs would be perfect.
BUT, for me , it's as exciting as watching paint dry.

Kinda like Coach , trying to kiss a 6 ft super model =Fail.  :D

I'd like to be as fit as I used to be cardio wise (won every event at school level (in school not national - I wasn't good))... be able to just run 20k if I wanted, go 10k over mountains and be OK the next day. I am too big for it now (110kg dry at 6ft1/187cm) but miss when I would just run where I wanted to go.

On point, it isn't so ridiculous to want to be in shape to DO things as opposed to looking like you COULD do things (which bodybuilders effectively do). Yeah I look good, but I woke up yesterday sore to the touch everywhere from a back workout. How shit is that?

Do one pushup or air-squat for every word you post here.

I agree with this.  I never even did any cardio/conditioning etc until maybe 2/2.5 years ago...but now that I have, I won't stop.  It translates into everything - you just feel better most of the time.  It's a good feeling to be able to say, play flag football, sprint 50-60 times at 90%, and not even feel tired at any point.

When I returned to heavier lifting in Nov, the next day it felt like someone hit me across the back with a 2x4 when I woke up.   But I still want to do that stuff, so now I balance it - I won't let myself do weights consecutively, have to mix in conditioning / running / rucking....in other words, have to "earn" the straight up weight lifting days.

Soo-prise, suprise, suprise!  So you study up, practice, and improve.  Swimming is where it's at.

Just don't think about the urine.

In the true spirit and intent of this thread, I'll poo poo on your swimming suggestion.
I've tried swimming for cardio fitness in the pool at various times over the years.
On a serious note, it makes sense and seems like the perfect fitness activity.

BUT, for me, I loathe doing it ...go figure.

Treadmill incline walking, stair climber, elliptical and hiking are all enjoyable and "fun" for me.
Cycling should work but it ends up giving me hemorhoids

Best advice by far.
