Why does "training for basic fitness" suck ?
« on: January 15, 2016, 02:22:11 PM »
One would think that training for basic personal, fitness needs would be perfect.
BUT, for me , it's as exciting as watching paint dry.

Kinda like Coach , trying to kiss a 6 ft super model =Fail.  :D

BUT, I really am serious about this and frankly, I have no clue what the fuk to do.

Put 25lbs of weight in a backpack and walk a half mile.

2 days later, do a mile.

A couple days later go for 2 miles...

Once you are comfortable with that....start changing pace from brisk walk for 200 steps alternated by 200 quick shuffle steps.

Do not post any more threads about this fucking lame shit until you work up to 30lbs and can do 5-6 miles at a 15 min mile pace (giving you leeway due to age) with no discomfort.

Once you get there, start a new thread and I will give you next steps.

You have been given serious advice.  Now fuck off and follow it.

I'll opt for putting on some Depends and walking up/down the driveway with a 2lb  load of shit in 'em.
Next day, I'll add a few ounces of piss to my Depends and walk 2 laps. LOL :D

Ok, on a serious note, your reply got me to thinking about improved cardio fitness and losing FAT.
I have zero desire to force march with a pack on my back as I did that shit yrs ago in the USMC.
I would like the challenge of uphill, fast walking on a decent grade % incline.

The gym treadmills are good but only go up to 15% which is fine for my current hippo-like physique.
BUT, I can see the need for more resistance on my future walks via higher incline.
I've got the $$ to spend, so I've decided to order a Nordic Track incline treadmill.
It goes up to 40% incline and has a ton of programs to challenge yourself with.

I'm 100% serious on this. Thanks for the input.

Rucking is easy on the joints, low impact and torches calories.  You can do it on a treadmill, but that eliminates the outdoors and also can be tough on the joints.   Throw on headphones, a podcast or music and it's enjoyable.  My favorite ones are when the sky is clear, night time, and cold......good way to decompress.

Walking fast is too easy for you so you need a 40% incline? Sounds awful hard on your aging Achilles tendon.

Try this walking routine and tell me how easy it is. Most treadmills in the US show an electronic track showing 440 yards or a quarter mile. Some US treadmills instead of a track will show .25 as being a quarter mile. Start walking at zero grade or level ground at 3.8 MPH.  This is a brisk walk. After completing one lap. Raise the incline 1%. Complete that second lap and then raise it to 2%. Keep that sequence up with each lap increasing 1%. If you go from level to 14% grade one lap at a time with 1% increase you will be in good cardio shape. Good enough to start a  running program.

One of the reason steroid users hate fitness is because without the drug assist they are stuck with real reality of their limitations. It's easy to syringe and make drastic gains in 6 weeks. What's hard is doing an athletic work routine.

Flexing on stage in a thong or running  a tough mudder 5k may seem foolish, but to me, it finally makes sense. For the past 20 yrs , I've preached and posted the gospel of personal fitness goals over competition. FYI, this thinking gradually sucked out all the passion and enjoyment I once had for the working out.

Now , I'm in shitty BB condition with no competition goals and looking worse each year.
I feel like a total douche, but, wtf, I'm clueless as to what path to follow?

Love and kisses to my getbig brethren

Just take long walks everyday, I was at my personal best (strength and size wise) when I was doing exactly that.

It doesn't necessarily suck.  Depends who is doing it and why.  In your case, yes, it would suck.  But not because it sucks for your situation.  It's because you suck, and you suck so bad that things which were perfectly fine prior to your arrival become sucky as a consequence of your involvement.  Anything you touch will suck.  All of the downside of the Midas Touch and none of the gold.  You are the ice nine of suckiness.  I put on a full hazmat suit before opening this thread and still got a charlie horse.  I hope you appreciate the risk we're taking here.

What is basic fitness anyway?  Why would carrying weights around in a backpack mean you were more fit?  What is the measure?  What is the goal?

I get that someone who can carry 50 pounds and jog/walk with it for 5 miles at 15 min/mile has a pretty good level of some sort of endurance and strength combo, but why is that more basically fit than someone who runs 2 miles with no weight at 8 min/mile or someone who runs 10 miles with no weight.  Why is someone who is running or walking more basically fit than someone who can bench 275 and squat 315 for reps?

The whole jack of all trades approach to working out tends to be goalless.  This is one of my big problems with Crossfit shit.  Measures of basic fitness get more and more obscure to where you really aren't competing against anyone or making measurable progress.

Why would the average person - who is 60 in this case -  want to risk fucking up their knees and back to attain basic fitness?

Stupid thread. OP doesn't define his "basic fitness" goals, so everybody piles on with their fitness goals and their methods of achieving them.

Personally, my "fitness goals" are to be able to do basic shit without breathing heavy and have a physique that still makes my wife sigh when I take off my clothes. Everything else is secondary.

You missed the part where Howard should do his brisk walk with 30lbs of weight at a brisk pace off a short pier.

Your body takes a pounding moving at speed with weight on, doesnt matter how gradually you build up to it. The shearing force on your knees going downhill is disgusting.

Where did I tell him to do hills?

He's not moving at any speed other than walking until he conditions himself a bit.

Well, tbf, you didnt specify stick to the flats either.

Also, as an ex-Marine I doubt he's particularly keen to get back into loaded marches again. Not that hes going to follow any of the advice in this thread anyway.

Yes, I should have specified so he didn't go sprint up a mountain right after he read it.

Perhaps you should give him an alternative plan, as nobody else answered.
