Did you know KC, of KC and the Sunshine band wrote the McCrae hit in 1974 "Rock Your Baby" that netted him a cool $798,000 check and his co writer just over $250,000? I didn't until I saw him in concert last Friday and he told us the story.

Did not know that.  That tune is an object lesson for rhythm guitarists.  Well, at least for that time.

From the story he told, they had a drum machine on a synthesizer , and they would write songs off that.. they hired a guitarist for some crazy low amount and did the demo. It got picked up. At the time, his mom was on his ass about getting a real job. When he got the almost $800K check back in 74,  he told his mom that maybe she should back off. She did.

His concert was interesting. For me, growing up in the 70's his albums were part of the soundtrack to my teens. I can remember to this day some good times in my friends car listening to his music. But his voice today is completely shot. It is mid range and hoarse.  I knew that going in..  But when he came out, 30 lbs overweight with a short haircut, and started performing, his passion for the music, his enthusiasm infected us all and the whole crowd except the dude next to me, spent the entire concert or most of it, on our feet jamming to the classic songs. So I would rather hear the flaws in a performers voice, than a lip sync version of an artist I admire. I learned that with Gordon Lightfoot. I went to see him in Austin 2 years ago, and the rich melodic voice I grew up listening to was just a shell of itself. But I loved it.

If you could read my mind is one of my favorites. I think Vincent by Don McClean is right up there as well.

I saw Don McClean at a small venue about 10 years ago.  Great show and stories, and he had us all sing along to "This Little Light of Mine."
