Constantine brought the clean-shaven look back in fashion around 300 AD and the trend mostly continued until the end of the West in 476 AD.

The Emperor Julian, the last Pagan Emperor, who tried to change the imperial religion back to Paganism grew a beard in homage to ancient Greek philosophers.

This is a poor effort for a roman hairstyle.

I've experimented with it and the only to get that look right is by not washing your hair and letting your natural oils take over.

Not worth it in my opinion. Can't stand a dirty/itchy scalp.

beards came in style around 117 it seems.

Hadrian may have grown it to ape the Greeks. He was queer for all things Greek, as well as all things adolescent male. Or he might have decided to wear it to keep in good with the soldiers, since they were generally unshaven. Being popular helps with not being assassinated while on campaign. Although he didn't favor conquest he was on the road a lot.

Don't mention him favorably around Jews. He was a bit of a Hitler, although the Jews gave his armies a hell of a time and were no easy targets.

Some sources claim he had bad acne scars on his cheeks.
