You served and did what they wanted with you. I respect that.  My father served in World War II and when they found he was an amazing chef the generals wanted him to be their chef.  That was his job. He never sought that job. Every cog in the military machine makes the machine work.

Thanks Stunt,
I signed up to be a "combat engineer " *( explosives ordinance M.O.S.) and ended up in finance. 100% serious.
In all modesty, I did well on the ASVAB and even maxed out the math part.

About half way thru boot camp, I got called in to the Company CO's office.

Capt  said ; " I know you signed up for explosives , but the USMC wants you to change your MOS.

Me ; " Sir? This recruit is confused and was informed his MOS was a guaranteed ? "

Capt ; " It is. But  we want you to allow us to break your contract. If you agree
we will give you a $1500 bonus upon completion of your new MOS school training.

Me ; " What school or job will this recruit be reassigned to? "  ( I'm pumped and assume this is some high level stuff  :D)

Capt ; " You'll be in military finance . Ok, so what do you say?"

Me ; " The recruit accepts, Sir ." ( I was a tad bummed out ,but wtf. )

LOL, oh well, at least I didn't blow myself or anyone else up .

My mother had me tested a lot. I have never been above an 80. I know I'm not very smart and I have dealt with it as best I can.

Mohamed Ali had an IQ of 78, so I guess he wouldn't have been drafted anyway, despite his protest and jail time.

Seems it's only the US which requires an IQ test.

Pretty sure you can't join the Canadian forces with an IQ under 90.

HOWARD, At one time I was a C-4 expert. But I never did add that to my civilian resume.

Were you ever able to use your explosive expertise in civilian life?

The following may be of interest to ya regarding military finance....

100% true....

On the last day of my 3 year military obligation, I decided to stay to see what would happen .... Honest .....  this is 100% true.

But when payday came around, I wasn't on the pay-list, so I went to 'disbursing'  (Camp Pendleton) to complain  only to cause some mass confusion due to the fact that the USMC accused me of being a civilian and therefore not on any USMC payroll list.

The problem was only resolved when I got 're-drafted' somehow, got paid, and sent to Viet Nam for the next 13 months .... and that's when the story really got interesting. It all started with a damn Hemogoblin(?) shot  in Okinawa.

Howard, are you aware that a shitload of USMC records (mine included) were destroyed in a flood in the Washington DC building where our 'records' were maintained just prior to their transfer to computers?

Didn't know you were a fellow jarhead. Oooh rah!'

I hate to tell you this , but I was one small cog in the machine that helped transfer  paper pay records to the early cpu mainframe .
I was sent  to Kansas City to learn early DOS and input data into the old Apple "green screen" system .
It was tedious, boring work , but for a Jarhead it was a clean task in AC so I didn't complain.

I'm sorry to hear your records were lost and the disbursing (payroll) office messed with you.

Molesting boys was a common allegations in the 50's or 60's to prosecute gays.  Unless you have proof, you should hush up

USMC   85-91   E-5  Desert Shield/Desert Storm   Air Contingency Battalion... we went right away, set up LZ's and offloaded aircraft and eventually MPS.. ships..   and got lost a few times between Saudi and Kuwait..  ;D   diesel was .60/gal at middle of nowhere gas stations  and free goatsmilk ice cream bars... melted in seconds bc it was damn hot .. locals were happy to see us...   never got to unleash my .60...  they mostly just gave up.... left there soon after to organize our Battalion's drawdown....      Did the WestPac and Bearhunt stuff... some of the coolest things...  watching SR-71's take off at night (Kadena AFB) and C-130's taking off from Ie Shima (island off Okinawa) using JATO (jet-assisted take-off)  good times...  Semper Fi

USMA circa 1980.

...And when our work is done,
Our course on earth is run,
May it be said, "Well done"
Be thou at peace."
E'er may that line of gray
Increase from day to day
Live, serve, and die, we pray,
   West Point, for thee.

Jay, Walter, Howard and other Jarheads!

You Jarheads are making me remember shit that only Marines can recall!

But those old memories are way to old and long ago, so just let me say the following in an effort to keep this short.

I hate the time in which I spent in the Corps during those expended peacetime years.

It was similar to painting a white wall and waiting for the paint to dry.

But then when it came to my turn to head on overseas and shoot at someone, that white wall became a Picasso which I was painting with color crayans.

I arrived in Nam and did some crazy shit which got me unofficially classified as "crazy", which got me transferred to what I personally consider to be the ULTRA-TOP  unit in the Corps .... 1st Force Recon.

I'll never forget my C.O. telling me, "You're crazy. I'm sending you to 1st Force Recon!"

And then he laffed and shook my hand, "Good luck, son!"  as I thought, "What the fuck!"

And the next day I was folding parachutes while my new CO informed me, "Don't worry! We'll carry you down!"

God bless the Corps and all who served within it. And the 101st Screaming Eagles .... But that's another story!

Sorry for the above but if someone yells 'Jarhead' in a vacant room, I jump up and salute the  wall!

Something I never learned in boot camp.

Aaaahhh yes, I experienced my share of " hurry up and wait" .

Even being an "office pog" involved some being " volunteered" for crap duty.
I remember our office " TOP" ( E9 MSGsgt) came back to our data input area.

He points at me, laughs and says ; " Our office needs a volunteer to re-qualify for chemical attack readiness.
You're the jr rank , so guess who is going to out to for gas mask duty?! "

I just mumbled ; " yes sir Top" and figured I was going back to gas chamber training which
was my worst experience in boot camp.

Turns out he was just screwing with me as we had some newbie PFC  who'd just arrived.
I didn't get to see the look on their face, when Top informed him. But the scuttlebutt was, he damn near cried.
I felt bad for him, but not bad enough to volunteer to take his place LOL.
