HELP. Maintaining my current physique...
« on: May 08, 2006, 08:22:47 PM »
I've been reading this board for a while now and over the past year I have reached my goals. I am happy with my size and physique. I love the gym but I always promised myself that I didn't want to get "too" big because I don't find it particularly attractive ( I know, I know you say just get huge) but I am in this sport for the fun and to achieve a body that I think looks good not Mr. Olympia....  The problem is I want to continue lifting and getting stronger without getting any bigger. I love my current physique and I don't want to get any bigger only more cut. I was hoping you guys could help me out and give me some tips. I want to continue working and getting stronger but not get any bigger only more cut. I know how to get cut so that's not the issue; it's more of the fact about continuing to make strength gains without changing my current physique...

Sorry for the long post and thanks for all your help fellas.

you got 3 options
option a- powerlifting style training while maintaining calories the same. heavy lifting! lift the weight no matter what...form dont matter much.
option b- overtraining...simply go to the gym as much as possible and lift as heavy as possible...that will make sure you dont gain any size yet get somewhat stronger. in this case make sure you increase your ave daily calories otherwise you will lose size!
option c- this option is called anavar.

i want the new car but not the payments, i want a lot of pickup in the engine but not a gas hog, i want the world, i want the whole world, give it to me now.....(stealing the last line from varuka salt)

its very difficult to get stronger without getting bigger, you could under feed yourself and lean out but in the end strength will drop without the proper feeding. you could do more cardio but again you will lose muscle size. really if you stay away from roids and consistent in working out and keep the reps med to high and cardio med intense you can look forward to staying the same every year. the trick is you don't get "big" unless you push yourself every workout and feed yourself the calories you need to grow.so if you happy with average than never push yourself and guess what...you will be.

May want to switch your current training to less exercises or set's or  reps. You don't have to use a power lifter's scheme to get stronger if that doesn't appeal to you. There is a thing called power BB'ing which can be very effective if strength is one of your major concern. It offer's a large choice of exercise & equipment to use when working out.  Becoming stronger and using huge weights does not always mean that muscle size will follow. Take a look at some of the lifters in the lighter classes of PL'ing & OL'ing for example. Pound for pound their much stronger than a lot of the heavyweight & super heavyweight lifters. Eat a healthy diet with enought calories for maintence and repair (recovery). Try for two or three workout days a week. Make workouts short and to the point.. Lot'
s of guy's get better satisfaction going for personal best and getting stronger than for gain extra muscle mass anyway. I know I do. Good Luck.
