hey everyone hows it going,

well i am a hybrid of a boxer/bodybuilder , i practice boxing about 2-3 times a week and hit the gym hard with the weights ( using higher reps at the moment due to some complacations ) rate now im on a 5 day split but will be moving to a upper/lower split in a week. i have a few questions about cardio , supplements , and nutrition....

1. since i am doing boxing and bodybuilding what would be the best way to do cardio to lower my resting heartrate , develope endurence, burn fat and get all these benifits with out losing crazy amounts of muscle . also how many times a week would this be performed??

2. i was wondering what kind of supplement stack for someone in my postion so take ( never really took any supps besides creatine , fish oil , protein , multi-vit)

3. Could you recomend a nutrition book that covers eating for health , building muscle , losing fat ? (i already have the game over book , good read )

i appericate your time and knowledge , thank you

Ahhh.... although not a boxer, boxing is near and dear to my heart.  My knuckles bear permanent scars from the hours of hitting a heavy bag and I watch every fight I can, in addition to my bodybuilding hobby

While this may not be totally responsive to your question, may I recommend (if you haven't read it already) "Coming on Strong" by Franco Columbo who talks about the interplay between boxing and bodybuilding (at one point he was doing both as a successful amateur thinking of turning pro and then he transitioned into weightlifting and then bodybuilding.

If I recall correctly, the bodybuilding helped his boxing (in his last match he almost killed someone)

Thank you for the reply. I will look into it. Did he mention anything about nutrition and boxing training?

  • Well?
There's a good variation of supplements there, don't think you need much else.

The one book you should get is Ron Maughan's Sports Performance.

Great book, no bullshit. Lots of recommendations for all kinds of sports, thus giving a good overall perspective. Is available in paperback now too.

Don't ever rely on supplements. I would stop taking any kind of vitamins if I were you, or at least make sure the concentration is very moderate.

Make an effort to eat from lots of different vegetables and  other good food sources instead. The other supps seemed good.

I agree with Hedgehog on the Ron Maughan's sports performance book.  It will help.  Your supplements look good all the basics are covered.  Since boxing is more or less an endurance sport, you can still put on some fairly good size.  (look at Tyson, roy jones, Holyfield, etc.)  My brother in law is a mma fighter.  He spars for an hour to 90 min a day, does weights with me 4 times a week for around 45 min to an hour and then does his cardio 5 days a week.  He weight around 190 and is hella cut up and in good cardio shape.  It all comes down to calorie intake.  If you can afford a session with a trainer to set up a nutritional program and test your body fat etc.

I did boxing and bodybuilding and it did slow me dwn slightly but OMG the power in my punches increased x4! Every one is right u just need to eat every 2hrs and get plenty of calaries and water. I didn't take any supps cause i tryed taking and not and my gains where the same.(maybe the stuff i had sucked i dunno) but i ate Veary well!!!!!!
It's definatly doable and i recomend it. Oh also the slowness decrases over time when ur boady adapts over time, I was just a wee fraction slower mind u but the power advatage was worth it! The thing about body building ect... is actully it's pritty simple u work like u mean busness, do it proper, and eat proper, and thats about all there is to it!
Thats why i barly post any more, most of the same info gets put out over and over again
because BB is simple and straight foward.. just Basic stright up kick ass hard work!
Oh one important key i found was workout in 30-45min full intesity!

Over the weekend, I remembered reading this article:

"How They Train: Conditioning Methods of World Champion Boxer Evander Holyfield" by Frederick C. Hatfield, Ph.D., FISSA( "Dr Hatfield describes the conditioning program that prepares Holyfield for all the physical demands of a championship fight").

Hatfield has written several sports and bodybuilding nutrition books.  I think this is what you may be looking for.

  • here comes the hotstepper!
i do both! My boxing has gone through the roof once i started lifting heavily!

now my power punches are just that...powerful! I was told it would do nothing but hinder my fighting but i've found that to be completely opposite of everything i've experienced! i've since stopped my powerlifting routines and gone just to bodybuilding and endurance related exercises.
