Clean and press
« on: October 24, 2006, 09:05:09 AM »
Does anyone else do this routine, i use it as my main compound shoulder movement, except instead of starting from the floor i start from just above the knees. HAng clean the weight up then press straight up. Shoulder burn extreme.

I had suggested to a friend of mine that he tried it and he loves it, though he is currently training using 10x10 (GVT), and that exercise is gonna be a killer for him.

Just venting as its an awesome exercise!!

I have never tried. I have never tried pressing standing up either.  :-\ I don't know why now that I think of it.

I know. Cause you don't work out.
haha oh. right, thats why  thank you alex. it makes so much sense now. and I suppose you do? I think you do. You see I "train" not workout. to me there is difference. you workout all right. just like a calvin klein model would.

it is a very good exercise, dont try too much weight though, i tweaked my rotator cuff on this once. I do love this though, especially at the end of a shoulder workout to just kill you.
Valhalla awaits.

I alternate between the clean/press and seated DB overhead press every few weeks for my main shoulder exercise.

i do a full clean and press for every rep...very intense full body exercise when done with heavy weight, you will be working alot of muscles. i try to use very little knee bounce to press the weight overhead.

I do full cleans but seprately.
Reason i do them from knees is that i put on more 10kg discs (gym celings too low for the 20kg discs), and i want to focus more on shoulders and less on legs.

I did sets of 10, 3 set the heaviest. then set 4 use same weight as set 2 and set 5 use same weight as set 1.
BURN lol.

Like i sed my friends gonna try clean and press for German volume trainnig, now that will be vvv hard.

I just started doing them for something different in my training adn i'm loving them! i'm doing them from the floor to try to try and develop more explosive and overall strength! I'd say stick with it and see what's up! They burn the hell outta my shoulders and traps!

I do cleans... i rarely do standing presses anymore though... my back is getting old... but cleans (i go from the floor) are an amazing mass builder for the shoulders

Used to do them. Got a bit of response, but now doing seated shoulder press to isolate the delts and avoid any momentum with the legs. Will probably go back to C&P soon enough! ;)

Don't feel the need to. I get the 6-12 rep range with seated presses and the 1-6 range with push presses, so that covers the pressing side of things. I'm tossing up whether to keep upright rows or throw in some power cleans for overall shoulder thickness.

i skipped the rows now and went tot he clean for a more over all power exercise! i'm loving how it makes me feel! it's one thing to be big..it's another to be strong as well...functionally anyway. :D  The seated overhead presses are awesome for size! helped me out alot in many ways..but when bringing or picking up any kinda weight..they haven't benefitted me much...and there was an incident where i realized just using overhead presses created a weak point in my training...

If the back is bothering you when doing overhead lifts than put one leg back (or forward...whatever makes you happy) a bit. Gives better support and less stress on the back it's self. Lot of guy's hold the knees too stiff when pressing. A slight bend reduces a lot of stress on the back. Keep the weight directly overhead at the top position. A lot of people don't. Which again, put's extra stress on the back.

Cleans are a mass builder. So are Hi-pulls, which are done with a wider grip. That wider grip affects the laterial delts very strongly. Rear delt's also. Push presses (bar resting on the heels of the hand) and jerk presses (slight knee action/dip to start the press) can also be included, from time to time, in any pressing workout. Preformed best when using a power rack.

A guy from Italy once taught me the value of pressing when sitting flat on the floor, legs out in front of the body.  Not the same as sitting while pressing.  Main focus was on pure pressing power and core strength from the lower back and ab's. Took any help from the hips/legs out of the exercise. Usually used DB's (one or two arms) for this movement but BB's were used at times. Could also clean from this position, which is a whole new element to core training and raw power.  Another exercise was cleaning and pressing while on the knees. Whole different muscle involvement and feel from this movement. Great power and size builder. Good Luck.
