Front smith machine squats
« on: May 03, 2007, 11:10:12 AM »
Just a tip. Try them out.

After seeing Jay doing them in one of his vids i decided to give them a try. The burn i got in my quads was incredible. very isolating for quads. In regular squats ass does alot of the work thus emphazising less on quads.

Very uncomfortable in the beginning putting the bar on the upper chest and all but after first coupple of warmup sets with light weight i got the techniqe in.

they're fine as long as you have a Smith that runs on a straight up and down track, doing them on the stupid Flex Fitness smith that we have in my gym is nearly impossible.

I do em with a bar (no smith at home). They're a bitch of an exercise but I end up feeling the effects for close to a week - guaranteed.

Try a Pre-Exhaust Super-Set of Leg Extensions, immediately followed by Smith Front Squats with a couple of ten pound plates under your heels........thank me later,or curse me during the set!!  :)

I go much lighter than I used to and just try to go really slow with the emphasis on squeezing at the top with a slow negative.

Earlier this year,I trained legs twice a week after not doing this for eons, and my knees killed me....never had knee problems before.

I attributed it to heavy leg exts. super-setted with lying leg sled, plus the ext. machine at my gym fucking blows! :)

i dont really like doing doing pre-exhaust before the first base exercise because it makes me so much weaker then. i usually do some pre-exhaust legcurls in the end of the workout.

my routine looked like this(in this order):

4* set front smith squat
3* set hack squat
4* set legculs
3* set  mashine legpress(close footstance)

for hamstrings i just did:
4* set legcurls
3* set stifflegged deadlifts

as you see i get some pre-exhaust from legcurls before the legpress. i prefer to be fresh before my first base exercises.
i like close stance cause it give a nice burn in the outer quads and i want more sweep :)

we have those at our gym. LAME ASS SALAD! What's the point of having a smith machine running at an angle anyway? Gives bad habits a whole new meaning.

I love the Front Squat!  Personally, I prefer the bar instead of using a Smith machine...and it is from experiance I say that.
The Smith machine is limiting in that your body can't find and move in it's natural motion.  The Smith is definately safer, but IMO less effective.

Agree, it also could lead to injury.

i used to do them in a smith but have had better results free bar.

try this superset...

Warm up well
Front squats 15 reps then switch to back squats to failure with the same weight. pyramid up in weight until the front squats get into the 6-8 rep range. maybe 5-6 supersets. always go to failure with the same weight on back squats. since you are stronger on back squats you will be doing higher reps and really making the quads work.

of course do these ass to ankles.

believe me these will kill your quads.

I gotta give it a try, i've always loved free weights but with squats your ass and lower back seem to do most of the work rather than my quads. How many sets do you throw in?
