How does cardio burn muscle?

I'm doing about an hour every day first thing in the morn on an empty stomach, and a friend told me I was burning muscle, maybe some fat but mostly muscle. I am getting weaker, but my protein intake is pretty high, I don't understand how this works. From what I know doing cardio first thing in the momrning is the best way to NoT burn muscle right? If you're blood glucose levels are low, you're body kicks out GH which preserves muscle. He said that is just a theory and not totally true. I want to burn fat as fast as humanly possible, if I burn some muscle that's ok I am a fast gainer I can put it back on later, but right now I want to get ripped. I am also taking an eca stack in the morning, how will this affect what I'm doing? Whats the best method overall?

Also how much does your heartrate really play a role in burning fat? I'm 26 5ft9 about 228 lbs or so, pretty muscular if I do my cardio first thing in the morn on empty stomach with ECA stack do I have to keep my hr around 135 or will the cardio be effective at less than that?

If you're doing your cardio first thing in the morning your glycogen (carb) stores are depleted and your muscles are going to either use fat for fuel or turn the amino acids in your muscles into glucose through gluconeogenisis and use that for fuel. If you keep your heartrate under 130 your body will use fat for energy thus preserving your protein stores. If you do high intensity cardio, over 130 heartrate, your body will steal protein from you muscles to turn into carbs because that is the fuel of choice for high intensity exercise. Keep you cardio low intensity and you should hold onto your muscle and burn fat.

Ah ok that helps. How does ephedrine influence all of this? WIll it help preserve muscle?

Ephedrine jacks your metabolism up, which helps you burn more calories.

Eating plenty of protein is what preserves muscle.

You will only burn muscle if you do hours of cardio and/or your calories are very low.   Glycogen is always the primary source of energy, not protein no matter your heart rate.

What if glycogen is not available and fat is?

According to you one would never burn fat since the body does not turn fat into glycogen.

Primary doesn't mean only.   Why would increasing your heart rate cause your body to use protein rather than glycogen and fat?  Where has this been documented?

I call bs. You don't get to this size without knowing the fundamentals of fat loss.  ::)

Remember we're talking about doing cardio when glycogen stores are depleted from sleeping, so glycogen isn't readily available.

Your body can't produce energy from fats fast enough when doing high intensity so it will rob protein from muscle to turn into carbs.

Carbs generate ATP quicker for the high intenisty exercise.

If you're glycogen depleted and you do low intensity cardio your body will burn fat first (a small amount of protein too) but your body will not burn fat if you do high intensity cardio because your body can't burn fat that quickly, it's a slow burning energy source.

According to what you're saying your body only burns glycogen and protein for fuel.  If that's true under what scenerio would you ever burn fat then?

I've been training 12 years amigo my size and muscularity is not in question. I have always been pretty big and reasonably lean, but never ripped. I competed when I was 19 but in all honesty I really was in no shape whatsoever. I put this thread up because I've been doing cardio every day and just started my diet and I feel smalller and weaker, and I'm afraid I'm losing muscle. Just asking people for information.

I read that this has been disproved and that most people upon wakeup still have enough glycogen stored in the muscles and in the liver to run several marathons.

In my experience cardio doesn't burn muscle at all. It's simply an excuse for lazy often constantly bulking people who never look "good" or defined because they mentally doesn't have what it it takes.

Exactly.  Plus when dieting your glycogen will be lower so your muscles won't look as full.  People (dumb people) mistake that as losing muscle.
