Farmerswalk for Cardio
« on: June 11, 2007, 09:44:44 AM »
66lbs each side, around 300m 5x with breaks of 2 min, nothing get's the pump going.

I'm doing Farmerswalk (see image below) for a week now and I think they are really good for fatloss.

Discuss.

I've started walking around the gym with the heaviest dumbbells I can find til my grip gives out and it makes me sweat balls and gasp for air the whole way through. That's a good idea! I can't wait to get my farmer's walks in.

Can also do a version of Farmer Walks with a wheelbarrow. Try going up a hill with Farmer Walks now and than. If you want true cardio than use straps for longer distance walks. Either way, shrug the shoulders during a Farmers walk from time to time. Got to make sure the traps are completely dead when your done. Good Luck.

I have the same problem with walking lunges ~ my grip gets really weak, my forearms ache and the gravity really pulls on the shoulders  ~   :-[  any suggestions?  I suppose I could try straps.

Instead of dumbells you could try them w/a barbell across the top of your shoulders

For the ambitious Princess L to consider: Seeing as how the main purpose is working the glutes/hips/legs, and not the grip, strap used would be suggested. There use to be  gripping gloves, some with a hooking device attached, but I do not know if they are still available. Or a person can hold the DB's at a shoulder  position, like getting ready to press, while walking. Of course, getting back to basics, place a BB on the back when doing walking lunges. Just my view but step-ups give a much better focus and better stretch, than walking lunges do. Either with DB or BB.

If anyone wants a different slant on the Farmer Walk, than do them using one arm at a time. Alternate this with regular Farmer Walks. Develops better balance, strength and assures both sides are getting equal work. A good core strength movement if anyone happens to be into athletic training. And a stamina builder. Good Luck.

I strap in after my grip fails. It stills makes you hold onto the weight though. If straps did all the work you could wrap them and not wrap your hands around anything and just lift with your wrists and we know that's not the case.

How deep do you guys go with your walking lunges? Do your knees touch the floor? Or go til just before they touch to keep from getting a split second's rest? I don't take wide steps becuase it blows balance too.

If your heart is racing and you're sweating profusely during the exercise. I think that constitues as a fat burning endeavor! ;D

just because your heart gets to work and you sweat doesnt mean you're burning a lot of fat, then high reps with squats would be the ultimate fatburner

I go til just before they touch the floor.  If I let my knees touch the floor I would be injured in no time  :-\

When you say you don't take wide steps do you mean long steps?  I'm sure you know this but you shouldn't let your knee cross over the plane of your toes.  If balance is a problem a wider step (spreading your legs wider) should help w/balance, not hurt it.

Just becasue it hasn't been done doesn't mean it won't work.

Do you agree that squats are one of the hardest, most taxing exercies on the body?

Burns TON of kcals, which in turn would lead to fat loss with appropriate caloric intake.

The stairmaster is just like walking stairs, or maybe a step-up, which is a BB exercise.

If you’re not already, try picking something to stare at in front of you and stay visually focused on that point as you lunge.
Shifting your gaze during execution can often have an adverse impact on balance.

A woman in my gym had a hell of a time with her balance while lunging. I explained the fixed gaze method to her, and she’s been using perfect form ever since.
