Training Abs
« on: December 28, 2007, 04:22:39 PM »
I train abs 3 days a week(every other day).  I do three sets of 20.  Ive been doing this now at the end of my workout for a few months now.  Ive heard that doing this is a waste of time.. is this true?  Am I doing too much? Thanks

I dont think you understand my question.  I wanted to know if what I'm doing is worth it or not or if I'm doing too much.. maybe lower it.

do 4-5 exercises in a row without resting between exercises for 3-4 sets each....go to failure on all exercises.

The reps will decrease as sets go on.

Diet, and cardio will get rid of excess fat........exercise will build abs.

Too much bodyfat=invisible abs no matter how good they may be developed.

You are far from doing too much......but your body is so used to the same old routine that  it won`t progress after a while...........pick my method above and switch up ab exercises often for better results.

Ok this is what I'm doing now.  I train abs after my workout.  These are the days I do it on..  it goes like this...

Tues-Back/Abs
Thursday-Chest/Abs
Saturday-Pull Ups/Abs

Thats when I do abs for the week.  On Saturday its like a off day for me except I add in pullups to do at the end everyweek.  Sometimes I switch up days and do triceps saturday along with the pullups/abs later in the day.  I do abs on an exercise ball 3x20.  What other good ab exercises are there?  I perfer freeweights.. I dont go to the gym so I'm making my own home gym.  I'm in the middle of getting new equipment and other things. Thanks for the help.

some good ab workouts at home would be leg lifts, scissor kicks, side to side, bicycle crunches, regular crunches...i actually do all of these things at the gym along with hanging leg raises and incline sit ups, but wes is right too much fat and youll never see them no matter what and on top of that youll look more fat...diet is key and efficiently timed cardio

I dont really have a special day to train abs.. I just do them at the end of my other workouts about every other day.  I actually use the exrx site.  I'm going to go switch up from sits ups on the ball to doing v-up.  Thanks for the help.

abs recover fairly quickly. If you use weighted exercises I wouldn't train them any more than 2 to 3 times a week. Unweighted you can train them up to every training day depending on your own recovery abilities. I like to train abs as a warmup.

Try doing a full sit up.  I hadn't done them since I was a little kid until just recently.  I've actually gotten much better results, as of late, from them than I have with crunches alone.

a full sit up..its not bad but crunches are more effective imho also make sure while doing either of them not too put your hands behind your head...

Direct ab training isn't all that neccessary.  Most people can get away with training their abs directly for about 6 weeks a year and they would be fine.

I like to hit abs every other workout.  Since I work them fairly frequently, I may only perform about 5-6 sets (but I make each set count).

I don't train abs as often as I would like - once every two weeks if I'm lucky. I'm ususally so fucked after training everything else that I never really bother with them.  :(
