A felony on someone's record may make things a little more tough, but it does not necessarily destroy their future. 

For someone who is already borderline... I'd say it would. 

Whatever happens, I hope it's not "just punishment" but rather a true lesson.
Kid's like that don't respond to punishment, ...at least not the way we want.
For them, punishment just makes them tougher and stronger, ...and more determined not to get caught the next time. What he needs is a true lesson in understanding the ramifications of his actions.

Since he used it 8 times, and not just once "to see if it would work" I say press charges.  I would think the stores he used it at may press charges too since they are the ones being out the money.  I suppose if he will be charged by them, then you could pass on pressing charges yourself, but he definitely needs punishment because this was serious.

 Is he young enough that his record may be sealed later on?

What are you talking about? I didn't say I hope he's NOT punished, ...just that a punishment only route (without a true lesson) is just going to make him tougher & stronger, and teach him not to get caught next time.
