good point, and the CONFEDERACY was in every legal right to do this.  However, the attack on fort sumter was an act of war, and the confederate flag was also flown as a war banner.  The Confederate flag represents a nation which declared open war on the United States and attempted to do her harm. No matter what the basis of the original grievances, flying that flag now suggests a willingness to rebel against the United States of America, and suggests a certain disloyalty towards our nation.  Now that there is no Confederacy, this flag is not relevant and should only be viewed in historical context or in museums.

Bingo.  The United States is a Republic, a collection of independent states, and any time the Federal Government tries to assume too much power over them they SHOULD fight back. The problem today is they don't have the same spirit they had back then and lay down to the Fed way too much.
