you have to "feel out the situation" and try your best to "be yourself"
what always wins out, initially, when trying to introduce yourself to a woman is the law of attraction- quite simply, if she is attracted to you (based on your looks or personality or whatever) it will make the conversation easier.  If she isn't attracted to you, then it will, obviously, be ALOT harder/impossible to "break the ice".

and mind you in the situation that she isn't attracted to you, remember that it isn't personal- she just already has a notion of what she wants in a man and you're not it (for the moment)

The previous is a example of my "Brad Pitt" theory.  Brad Pitt is, argubaly, the best looking man in the world (even in his recent haggard looking state).  However, despite this distinction, you will find alot of girls who are repulsed by him.  Why? Who knows- maybe don't like good looking men, maybe they like fat guys.  Whatever the reason maybe the fact in this matter is that not every girl (despite how desperate/homely or how hot) is gonna be attracted to you no matter how good you look...and it isn't personal- they just have their preferences

btw, I hope people don't think i'm trying to come across as "the guy who is the forum Lothario" cuz i'm just like every other guy when it comes to women
