Training same body part, same day, 12 hrs apart
« on: February 02, 2010, 03:11:29 PM »
I got a question that I've been wondering about for awhile. I typically work out a varied split routine of 4 day cycles, with the usual Back and bi, Chest and Tri etc etc. I work a 10 hr evening shift and there are time I get to the gym late, and rather than rush through a particular workout, will do half then, and the rest when I get off work later that evening.

Do you think this makes any difference either way? My concern is tearing down the muscle early in the day to some extent, then tearing it down more later the same day. I'm leaning towards, as long as its in the same day, then the healing will not be affected when I go to hit the muscle next time around.

So basically what you are asking is this:

1) Can you tear down your muscles multiple times in a day?

2) Can you finish a part of your intended workout later in the day?

3) Is it alright to use the same muscle groups again later in the day?

4) If your workout was originally intended to be Chest, Triceps and Biceps, can you do Chest and Triceps in the AM and Biceps in the PM?

5) Should the muscles be torn down together all at one time, or separately?

Good questions.

I would say "yes" to all 5. (even #5)

I am being facetious of course. I actually do understand what you are asking. You think that since the "healing process" has already started, you are somehow inadvertently delaying it (or preventing it) by working out again- even if it is a muscle group that has not yet directly been worked yet.

Your muscles don't know what time of day it is. If the healing has truly started, I would base my decision on whether or not any soreness had set in by the PM. It probably wouldnt stop me from doing what I had intended to do, but if it did, I would just shoot for the lower body just to make sure I wasnt slowing progress.

I don't really get that anal about anything anymore. I have my size and I keep it with ease. There really are no rules. Do what feels right. If you have the energy to do a split in a day, I say, "just do it" and be done with it.

I can just ramble on and on and on....

Actually yes. Twice (or more) when hitting a selected muscle group can, and has, worked well for others. And actually no, you should not be really tearing down a muscle group when training it. Applied well for bring up a specific areas . Seems to work very well when increase strength is the goal also. Training to the extreme of doing a single exercise once (1 set) every hour for a base line of 5 to 8 times (hours) a day, has increased size and power for that lift. Never going close to complete failure is one the tricks of this system. Common sense training another.Good Luck.

think kevin levrone used to do that,,, early and late split same body part...

you could do your heavier low rep, sterngth stuff early and your mid-high rep pump kinda stuff later on,,, this way if the muscle group feels tired/weaker from your early session & work etc.

go for it.
