Calves are muscles just like anything else. I train mine 1x a week, no different than anything else.
If they're stubborn (I have never bought into the "I have the genetics that don't allow me to build calves" theory...do the work, they'll grow. Period.) you could train them 2x a week, and I would make sure to have 3 days or more rest between workouts. And only do so for about 6-8wks and then go back to one time per week, and cycle this way till you get what you're after.

The 3 rules I've always used for calves: 1) Full ROM. All the way up. All the way down. 2) No bouncing! This is a huge mistake that I see nearly EVERYONE make. 3) Make sure you train each part of the calves (gastroc and the soleus) in each workout and according to the fiber make-up of each part.

2-4 times a week I think. Gastroc in the 8-12 rep range, 15+ for soleus.

There is an excellent calf thread on this board in case anyone missed it.

Might do calf raises (any type) in bare feet, which can allow a much better stretch than shoes. Also the grip with the bare toes can actually help improve the calf's. If you sissy style PC 'spa' does not allow the crude attempt of have bare feet in their special fitness center, than do the calf work at home.

One of the better calf movements is the one leg, full stretch, calf raise. Just need a sturdy 6" block of wood, street curb, box, etc to make this an outstanding exercise. Try 12 to 20 rep's, with a 2 second pause at the bottom while holding a full stretch position. Than do the rep as fast as possible, making sure you have a full & hard muscle contraction at the top position. Hold a DB as you advance with these workouts. You might find that you are only kidding yourself if you think having a 3 toe position (pointed in, straight or out) will improve the calves that much. Try for 2 or 3 days a week for calf work, as a general rule

One of the best all around calf builders (size, cuts, etc) are sets (4 to 6) of 40 yard sprints. Look at the calves of track athletes and football player for example. Throw in 100 meter dashes from time to time for even greater potential calf growth.

Actually the calf fiber, designed by nature, are not quite just another muscle. Ask some Bros why their calf's seem just above average but their carrying around 28" thighs, 19" guns and 52 " chest. Genetics can play a role towards muscle indeed. My ethnic background insures large muscular calf's, with little or no work involved. Just a luck of the draw, given by racial make up. Football also helped.

There is also the all day calf workouts, which include a calf exercise every hour, on the hour, maybe 6 to 8 times in one day. Really seems to boost the development quite well for some BB'ers. Good Luck.
