Pretty lame if he is not getting ready to step on stage even then as dorian said you should still train with what built you the mass whilst dieting , not going for max lifts but still using the bread and butter stuff like heavy rows , deads etc
You build mass with progressive overload with good to semi decent form on the bread and butter stuff , its how its always been done and nothing will change that..drugs and genetics aside look at jay,ronnie,dorian and even dex, 4 mr olympias all trained with heavy basics and these guys have the best genes and best response to hormones and also the best in terms of mass.
