Bodybuilding is a sub culture...always will be. Alex's post is the attitude that people should adopt. If you think you are going to be rich and famous from BBing you are an idiot.  Very very few ever have everything fall into place for that to happen. ...its the exception not the rule. If that's your belief you are no better than the pretty boys and girls who arrive in LA by the thousands every month, thinking they are going to be "stars".

That said I love bodybuilding and I embrace that it is a subculture. ..I wouldn't want it any other way.

As to the people here and IRL who say " when are you going to stop with that stuff," or " its not cool the be big anymore"....." chicks don't like guys who are too big".....I say with all sincerity..."Fuck You..its my life....I like it and I'm not bothering anybody. ..so mind your fucking business"

. Like Alex said...its a hobby for me....I spend a whole 6-7 hours a week at the gym....it doesn't get in the way of anything else.

Yes BFRS, he truly does.. GMan you're extending my thoughts.

Unfortunately bodybuilding isn't suited for everyone, some seek it to cover insecurity and other mental problems; some others are simply born to bodybuild and it becomes a healthy part of their lives. If you think about it for a second, something only 60 years ago was unheard of.

Yes there are drugs, corruption, "douches", but there are also achievers who push and discipline themselves to make something great out of their flesh and inspire others.

Greg W speaks the truth here.

It's an individual thing. Do it as an individual and don't worry about what everyone else is doing.

Not like I know anything about it these days though. I'm at 160 now and I look shitty. Just don't care about my muscles anymore.

Thanks.

That's what I like about it....its just you. I never was real big on team sports. ..or had a "rah rah" mentality. I HATE having a training partner.

I've always been somewhat of a loner. Not antisocial or a geek...I have a shitload of friends.  But at heart I'm happiest when I'm doing something I like by myself...which is why I Like it....plus I'm good at it. Which sounds like a stupid joke but if I was small and shit, and didn't grow...I would have stopped a long time ago. I'm not into banging my head against a wall for nothing in return

Awesome guys.

GMan, I've always been the same; never been big on team sports, always enjoyed spending time with my thoughts doing my own thing.

People that are in peace with themselves and self reliant are this way; counter example, a friend of mine literally cannot go to the gym by himself; he needs the moral support and the camaraderie to keep him going. He is not in peace with himself and has huge confidence issues.

Great thread of positiveness.

i am confident that i can have success in whatever i do....but i look at people the same way i look at machinery...."the less moving parts means the least chance of failure".....anything i have ever done on my own was a success...with others not so much..

Indeed. I don't get people like that...everything has to have a social component attached to it or they are not interested.

Which is actually got me in a slight quandary right now.

One of the owners of the company I do a LOT of work for...my cash cow...Really likes me and constantly asks me to train with him....he's a cool guy and all but I know that A: he's going to fuck up my workouts.  B: I don't want to (see above)...... and. C: I don't want to get too personal with the guy, I'm not real big on mixing friends and business. Ill go out for drinks and shit.. but now You are getting into my world...ya know?

Me too. That's why I love bicycling, rock climbing, lifting weights, shooting guns, yoga, hiking, etc.

I've always been into things I can just do myself. But I do play baseball on Sunday with some people sometimes.

For weight lifting, I don't have great genetics, not horrible though. I do stay cut and have a decent body shape, good v-taper and small waist. But it definitely feels like banging my head against the wall when I reach my natural limits and hit the ceiling.

LOL, I'm in the exact same situation Groink, plus the guy (hope he doesn't read this, if so sorry!) is always late and unprepared, however I enjoy his excitement and  enthusiasm coming from the simple fact of training with someone he looks up to :)

so I do show up and do him a favor; every workout is heavy legs; he complains and I don't see him for a week. :)

Groink are you saying that trying to convince you to add 22.5lb alternate dumbbell curl while standing on one foot on the half sphere medicine ball isn't really an option?

I've been having very primal but intense workouts while training at home. When by yourself with basic equipment, no distractions and total control of your environment, something interesting unleashes.

Sounds like a no-bullshit approach. I have a decent setup in my garage..pretty basic, nothing like yours. I can't get into it...I like the ritual of going to the gym

mine is pretty basic too; it actually took a while to get down with the routine, first I was doing a couple of sets, then sorting bolts, then drinking coors light..  but since raping coach onstage is concrete goal, no more bullshit :D

In this series, I will debate with you any negative aspect of bodybuilding and how to overcome being crippled by these and instead focus on your accomplishments, move forward and be successful and not give up on our dear subculture entirely!

#1 success impediment: "I quit, there's no money in bodybuilding, the only lucrative of all bodybuilding endeavors is GAY 4 PAY. why should I sacrifice time and energy for a plastic trophy?"

First, bodybuilding is not a career choice and should never be. A successful individual should first establish himself then perform bodybuilding strictly as a hobby. If money become available through bodybuilding endeavors, it should be considered bonus income and never be relied on to make ends meet. One must also put career first and never deviate from that. A good friend of mine not only worked as a teacher's assistant while finishing grad school, but was also a national level bodybuilder who eventually became a top pro. However, his Master's degree always came first and bodybuilding contests were arranged around semesters workload and not the other way around. The lifestyle must never take over and force one to perform denigrating activities instead of a fulfilling career.

Second, the trophy is not in your hands but in you (nothing to do with Andre's unfortunate accident http://www.hulu.com/watch/179424/the-league-exclusive-scene-im-inside-me). The sacrifice has its immaterial  reward; it's the empowerment that comes with it, a validation of your own capacity; With self-sacrifice comes goodness and great victory.

Well said KING!!!!

No matter how hard we try and win...it's the journey on the way there that shapes who we are and what we will be!!!!!
