It's ok to join the marines if you know what you get yourself into, otherwise stay away.
In Austria it's way less tough but the instructors are often huge assholes. Generally the worse the instructor is as a soldier the worse he treats young inductees - basically a loser lashing out on folks, who are at this stage, below him.

This was exactly the same in the Swiss army. I was very lucky that almost all the superiors in my chain of command were people you would also respect if they did not have their ranks, but I did see a good number of truly incompetent sadist a$$holes running around in leadership positions - fortunately I did not report to them.

I always found that the drill sergeants were much crueler than relying on physical punishments.  They usually restricted any weekend privileges for an entire squad or platoon and said, "Everyone thank Private (insert name) for your f'd up weekend"  Made you wish you could just get smoked instead.

I remember you had 7 minutes for a pump n' dump....shit, shower, and shave.  'Twas funny, 'cause for the first few days, most booters were constipated due to the stress and from eating Navy chow.  I had a great time in boot camp....except the time when the entire division got to see my shitted up drawers on the middle of the deck....'cause all our laundry had our names and last 4 of our SSN stenciled on it.  Horrible day that day, lol.

I was such a fuck up that they made get in rain gear with my drill rifle on the grinder and pt'd the shit out of me.   The sweat was disgusting.   They had an EMT present too.  LOL

I remember two knuckleheads getting info a fight.  Since no one outside the platoon saw it, our drill sergeant decided to keep punishment within the platoon.  So we had a short, yet touching "marriage ceremony" for the two knuckleheads, and they got to sleep in a shelter half outside the barracks that night.  Of course, since it couldn't be unguarded, they each had to pull an hour guard duty at a time.

I remember also having to sit watch sometimes in the middle of the night.   Damn that sucked.

Especially when the person on watch after you was a malingerer who took his sweet time to post, even though you had conscientiously posted early to relieve your fellow soldier/sailor/marine/airman ahead of you.

One fellow, when I tried to wake him up to relieve me on guard duty, tried to intimidate me into taking his shift.  He had just said, "I'll kick your ass if you bother me again..." neither he (nor I ) had noticed that our senior drill sergeant had just walked up.  The drill sergeant told me, "Griffin.  You're relieved.  Be anywhere but here."  I returned to my bunk and for the next hour everyone could hear the errant soldier receiving excellent training.

I spent a year at the USMMA after high school.   Part of the Navy.  I was recruited for track and field and had no idea what I was in for in terms of having to do basically an engineering program.   At the end of the year I had a 1.65 GPA and they gave me the choice of coming back and ding it over or leaving altogether.  We had to do boot camp and all the usual military stuff you do in the Navy.

I said I was coming back and after being home for a bit decided not to return since I had no way to get thruogh the academics.

Here's a good boot camp story:

We were climbing the ropes and one recruit got to the top and just grabbed the top and wouldn't come down.  He was in tears and crying for his momma(lol).  He kept screaming "I wanna go HOME!   I miss my MOMMA!"  The RDC screamed at him to get down asap.  A strange cross of helplessness and relief crossed his face and he just.............let go.  He fell down and broke his arm.  He got to see his momma afterall.
