Wasn't going to chime in, but you may want to look up some of the research.  Invariably this is going to just turn into a shitty thread.....

How about those men oiled up thongs this past weekend?  ((no homo))

I look up plenty of research.  Chiropractic is alternative medicine, not science.  There's been tons of great work on back pain for a lot of years, sure, but chiros aren't taught any of it and the therapeutic benefit of spinal manipulation most certainly hasn't been demonstrated to a reasonable level of confidence in anything resembling large clinical trials.

...among many others.  If it works, great, I'm sure it's a great option for some people, but it's a very dogmatic field.

Chiropractors are not a bad option.

Their origins might seem a little strange, but, in practice, they often times deliver a good service.

Remember, Western Medicine is not the authority on ALL forms of medicine.

Give it a try and if you don't like their service, don't return.

Anyone have any experience with chiropractors here?

I've had some nagging lower back pain from an injury I had in 2009. Long story short, I twisted my back playing soccer and following that I did a few leg workouts and ended up fucking shit up from deadlifting. Got an MRI which showed nothing, but I did some phys therapy which helped but the pain always comes back when I start working out again.

I don't want to give up soccer, or leg training.. and I suspect the physical therapist won't help, so I was considering going to a chiropractor. I don't even know if my insurance will cover it, but if it helps with quality of life its worth the price (hopefully).

Discuss below.

I have one on my staff. You don't have to give up soccer, you just have to learn to train right and stay away from the isolation bodybuilding bullshit. If you're playing a real sport, train like an athlete not a bodybuilder.

As far as science goes, thats probably left to pharmaceutical stuff.  Surgery isnt science.  Less than 30% of all surgical procedures have any research behind it.  There is an astound lack of communication between multiple MD's on a patient.  So much so that I have had one patient that has come into my office and upon looking ather drug list...and looking up the interactions....I was amazed and frightened.  Of the 22 interactions, 10 were of the 'severe' category, and about 9 were of the 'moderate' type.  Where is the science behind that?

Science isn't at all left to "pharmaceutical stuff", there's tons of very good research in clinical biomechanics and orthopedics on back pain (see the link Coach posted for example) but it sure as hell isn't being done or practiced by chiros.

I don't know what point you're trying to make for sure with the surgery and drug interactions stuff.  An MD is a professional degree and most who actually see patients on a regular basis aren't researchers any more than a chiro is, but there's plenty of research behind the drugs they prescribe and the procedures they perform, much more so than there is in chiropractic.

I herniated a few discs a couple years ago on the job having sex with four supermodels at once.

I had used a chiro on a bad back in the past with short periods of relief but this time I went with IDD therapy at a docs office, they have it at phys therapy places as well.
Anyway, you lay on a machine that heats, massages, and stretches you all at once. The therapy took 4 weeks but it has lasted almost 5 years now. The shit worked for me and I never had to use any narcotics for the pain, which is how a lot of people get into trouble with pills.
 IDD, google it.

DO NOT GO, THEY ARE QUACKS!!!!  I've posted it before, and I will say it again.  A chriropractor caused me to have a stroke from a neck manipulation.  I fell out right in his office, had to get an ambulance to come pick me up.  I posted about it in the thread on "what humbled you the most in life".  Seriously, PM me if you have any serious questions about that shit.

Honestly, I like the chiropractor.

But, it is a temporary fix.

After years of squatting/deadlifting/sports, my low back had some issues (which I ultimately found was more than likely due to IT band and piriformis tightness).  Supermans, Cobra pose and hyperextensions (making sure not to go too far past 180 degrees--I have a very flexible back--which actually can be harmful) were de riguer.

But honestly, the thing I believe helped me the most is an inversion table.  Teeter brand.  I also followed the video, and I am now back to normal squatting and deadlifting with no ills.

I always felt it was quackery at it's finest. They say your spine is out of alignment and fix it by cracking your back?  The only reason health insurance covers it is because the customers of insurance demands it. It's amazing how many attorneys use them as proof of an injury in a law suit.  They all make big money from being a partnered with suing attorneys.

Where the chiro "doctors" go wrong is when they make outlandish/ bullshit claims.

Any chiro that works on a child=bunk.

Any chiro that claims they can cure ANY DISEASE OF ANY KIND=BULLSHIT.

Like any profession, some are good and some suck.

My chiro def helped relieve pain and stiffness in my neck and traps.

hehe I said stiffness....

Fiance has been seeing chiropractors for 15 years for the same problem. Obviously it doesn't do shit, except for pay for the chiro's new Mercedes. Bunch of quacks/thieves preying on the naive.
