Good for him, he stood up for justice, not for blind arrogant patriotism :-/ Seeing as to what the US has been doing in the last ten some years alone speaks volumes.

It's funny how conditioned certain americans are to say things like he should be shot, he is a traitor, blablabla, when he no longer wanted to be a slave to the system and be responsible for deaths of others.

  I'll go out on a limb here and guess that being part of the "electronic security squadron" required some pretty high security clearances and knowledge.
However "electronic security" stuff  from  1984  is probably quite old tech now, declassified and taught in middle school now

Well, not really, low level electronics and understanding of how it all works goes a long ways. Just because some kid of today can operate an iphone that can do fancy things does not make a guy from 80s that can tap into and wire into electronics raw as useless.
