Can't you get a decent cardio workout with a Huffy?  Why pay 2,500 for a bike?

Agreed.  It depends on what you are interested in.

You just answered your own question.  8)

my buddy is a really good welder and built most of his home gym, like you said about lookin alittle rough,  my buddys basement home gym looks pretty rough also. but the stuff works great and is super strong and has held up now for 30+ years. when he welded those peices he made sure they would never fail
well my living situation is not a permanent one so I figure i can even sell the leg press/hack squat and what ever when i leave and recoup a lot of the money and the gyms near me suck.

Since I'm no longer competing, I just train to stay in shape so I do more circuit and cardio based workouts to stay heart healthy.  I still keep a 110 pound weight set and train with it occasionly but not much

all you need is a good olympic weight set up and a couple of simple cardio machines (one challenging machine and one that you can take it easy on).

a home gym is much better than going to the gym. No travelling, gym fees and no excuses for when you're feeling lazy as it is right at your feet.

I have a power rack, one of those weider benches with lat pull down, a chin bar, bowflex dumbells, heavier dumbells, a few more barbells and 400+ lbs of weights and that's all I need. I've been working out at my house for the past 6 years (3-4x wk) because the gym in my town sucks terribly.

I had a decent garage gym.

solid power rack

adjustable flat bench

2 45lb bars, 600lbs of weights

1 set of powerblocks (up to 90) with stand

random curling bars and dumbbell bars

all were from Caigslist, so you can be way under budget possibly

I was able to do most things except decline with the gym bench I had. I had another bench that had decline on it. I wanted to buy a leg press/hack squat combo but never got around to it. Legs is probably the only thing where I wanted more variety other than squats/stiff legged deads.

How much is that!

Mine cost me £2,700 about 5 years ago for all the attachments, not sure what that works out to in dollars, probably close to $4,000.It weighs 650kg and took me 8 hours to build the first time i put it up.Now i can do it in 2 hours, heres a few pics i took when i first opened it and all the pieces on the floor.

Own one and you will know.  http://www.cannondale.com/bikes

If you were were raised on a Huffy, and you're happy with it, you should probably stick with it, but obviously, there is a reason people (serious & recreational riders) trade up to better equipment when they are in a position to do so.
I did the expensive road bike thing and even went for a 500 mile ride in five days. No matter what you ride you are getting the same bike workout depending on how hard you push. Yes, you won't be able to keep up with a light weight road bike when riding a hybrid but you will have a lot more comfort.

I ride a top of the line hybrid type Cannondale now. It's the discontinued Adventure 1. Cost about 1K. It's riding position is upright and it's a relatively heavy bike and I can't keep up with skinny tire road bikes. I do get a great cardio bike workout and more important I am really comfortable for my whole ride compared to my old racing bikes.

If just for cardio, wouldn't the heavier, non-race huffy give a harder and better workout? ???

I started to work from home and decided to sell what I had because being in your home for almost 24 hours a day got old, especially day after day. I resumed my gym membership to get a break from the house and see people again.

Ha, it's about the same situation here. Yeah it's good for your mind to be in another environment, and a gym is always better than drinking 5-6 beers in a local bar ;)

Yea...same here.  When you live in the town of Sylva, NC (The same place they filmed the movie Deliverance), fitness centers are not exactly high on the priority list. :-\
